Thread: Opinions on boosters...

Just want the pilot community's opinion, since I find most boosters to be a complete waste of mass.
I'd rather dump the loose mass into ANYTHING else.
Only ships I can see a use for boosters (besides the 5m mass POB's) are the really slow ones like a b-wing that might need the extra speed to break away in a hurry and shunt/recharge for another pass
I know that not everyone runs a heavy fighter, so whats your take?
Is the mass worth the temporary speed boost?

I dropped my booster and was able to bring up the speed on my engine so I was just as fast at full throttle as I was in my old setup with the booster

A booster is amy last concern. I very rarely use it, mainly for just getting away from things i can't be bothered to fight.

I've got a nice L4 reward one, 2049 energy, 144 burn rate, 27 speed, 37 acc, 2.8k mass. I fit it on around everything else, and i really don't need it, but its good to have it there i feel.

I think boosters are a nice bonus, but their are definately more important things to be concerned with. I usually use a low end booster that's less than 4k mass(typically around 2k mass). you still get a nice bonus to speed for a short time which can come in handy and with such low mass there really is no reason not to have one in for the majority of the pilots. It's very rare that you are really using up the very last 1k mass in your chassis for something worthwhile.

For your average dogfight boosters are not of much use unless you are very adept at using it in very short bursts.

BUT. For taking down vettes and gunboats I love having boosters. The ability to get the heck out of dodge fast when crap happens it invaluable to me. In most of my loadouts the booster is way down on the list of priorities but I still try to fit a lvl two in somehow.

i gotta have it. go with a level 4 reward in all ships but bombers, bombers get a crafted for acc one, a reward level 8, or a 10. no sense waiting for that acceleration to kick in.

the thing about boosters is this, if you don't have a 100+ engine you are not going to get out in time in a .95 or lower ship, not in deep space. with the burn on a reward 4 you can extend from any PVE content in the game in about 4 seconds with a decent engine. it's less important if you have a crafted for speed engine, but heh. less important in the cheaterships too, since they never get hit anyway.

if you don't go to DS, or you don't have an RE'd engine, it's not really much use except getting places a few seconds faster.

tell ya what though, try turning while boosting in a 1.0 ship with a fast ypr engine.you'll never think of not equipping one ever again, and the same goes for PVP. you're much more difficult to hit while boosting, and alot of tricks can come off a little boost on the charge.

also, for PVP, say you are in a turn match and the guy's got you. he's got you andyou know you aren't going to be there in time. do you A) flop around like a fish and hope for the best? B) boost

i'm gonna boost. yeah i'm not in a good situation but i wasn't in a good one to begin with either.

My booster is the last thing I try to fit on a chassis. In almost all cases I stick to two different crafted Mark I booster configurations. My "Ultralight" booster is 540 mass, 17 speed, for 11.5 seconds of boost. My "Fast" booster is 1k mass, 30 speed, for 11 seconds of boost. If I happen to have extra mass, I'll go to something heavier, but that is pretty rare...

Currently my armor is the first thing to go (taking up 12k mass between the two) then i think about taking out my boosters.

Ive still got lots of mass free untill i get a 23k or lower lv8 engine and some decent lv7/8 weapons to fit in.

I currently fly without boosters because they don't fit in my pot pot starfighter. Attacking gunboats is very risky, but hey, I'm a droid engineer, so I love the excitement. The bigger my guns, the quicker its weapons seem to fly off so I try to disarm it in one attack... Sadly, most of the time it does not work and I know trying to fly away will end in my explosion. Just a little more mass and some faster boosters may help, but where is the excitement in that? (hehe, kidding).

This is just my personal flying style talking, but:

If the only thing you ever do in space anymore is duty missions to grind for parts/cash, boosters are not necessary in the least.

If you go to DS, PvP, or do some of the harder content, boosters are a must, imo, especially if you fly a cumbersome ship, and use them properly to minimize/negate the oversteer.

Again, this is just my opinion and flying preferences.

Contrary to what many people think, I find Boosters essential for my A-wing.

I can make do with a crafted mk I booster with a high speed and good accelleration.

Why a booster works well for me in pvp:

1.My ship is fast, however I fly an A-wing, therefore am speed and manouverability addicted

2.My shields aren't the best out there, neither is my armour, so basically, a booster does wonders for getting me out of tight situations at times. If I need to quickly make a decent amount of space between me an my opponent, I can achieve this with a booster. Burn time isn't too important for me because I rarely boost for the full duration..which leads me onto no.3

3.I have macroed a few booster settings. My most commonly used one is one where I set it to boost for a second. If you're pulling a steep manouver and boost you will find you'll momentarily turn quicker/sharper for a split secondwhile you're accelerating. I've found this very useful for etting out of the way of similarly manouverable fighters to me. Also, if anything, the short boost changes my velocity for such a short time that to anyone lining up a shot on me, it accelerates then decelerates mein such a short time that it'll almost certainly ruin their aim.

Now I'm not saying it's perfect, but it works for me. I actually got the inspiration off the new series of Battlestar Galactica (I hate the old series but this new one seems to have given the story some credability) and the way they use combinations of boost in that to swing their starvipers around. Nowgranted..in that they're basing it off 'real' physics whereas Starwars generally throws newtonian physicsout of the window, however...the basics can be applied.

In addition to this..it looks kinda cool.

All my ships but one have REed lvl4 boosters. Trust me, you will never need more than this. They are light, fast enough, and have a good duration if you get some good ones for RE.
