Thread: Dodging missiles

I was just wondering, I thought it was possible to dodge missiles in space? I tried this out with the Yavin 4 duty mission (basically have to fly straight forever before they decide to fire one at you), and 100% of the time I was getting hit by the missiles no matter what moves I tried to put on them. Essentially if they got close to me it looked like they would hyper-warp in order just to hit me. Does this mean I acutally have to use my chaff launcher someday?

Misiles will hit something. either the target, the CM, another ship or an obstacle (station/asteroid etc).

I thought I managed to dodge a missil but flying straight at it and rolling at the last second (wasn't aiming for it, the thing just appeard in view), but then I learned it had hit the ship behind me.

What is the maximum distance a missile can travel? Is it possible to get out of it's range after it is fired?

The only way I found to evade them is to fly them into something else like asteroids, other ships etc etc - you don't have a lot of time to do it though.

I just read the "Advanced PVP" linked from the FAQ, and realized this is one of the first things mentioned there. Guess for PVP I really do need to start carrying anti-missile devices. I just always assumed that I was not good enough to dodge the missiles.

You can both dodge and outrun missiles. I did all the time in my oppressor and did in my red tie last weekend. Just have to be in a very nimble ship with very good speed and pyr. I circled a missile at one point last weekend and got it spun the other direction before I hit boost at over 1600 in the opposite direction. Whether all those I have evaded hit something else or eventually poofed, I do not know.

Edit: personally never load chaff anymore and haven't since soon after jtl launched.

THis is something i miss from xwa, that you cant target misseles, and by doing that wait till they are getting just behind you and cut to max manuver speed and dodge it. Then wait for it to come back and repeat til it destroys itself.

Great fun in xwa
