Thread: Shipwrighting and Piloting what order?

Ok, so I currently have Piloting 1/2/1/1 and Novice Shipwrighting. I have a dilemma, however: I can't stand the Y-wing. I hate it with a fiery passion. I can't fly the thing, it moves WAY to clumsily and I can't shoot anything like X-wings, Interceptors and A-wings. So I fly my Z-95. Problem is, on my server, the only Heavy Z-95s for sale (there are, like, 3) are 450k, which is an outrageous price for someone who's only income is ship parts from loot (nothing else makes money anywhere near fast enough). So I'm confined to 11.7k mass on my ship, which, frankly, is pathetic. Here's a summary:

  • I only have a regular Z-95

  • I can only make money by farming loot

  • I want an X-wing, or a heavy X-wing

  • I can't fly the Y-wing (and the Longprobe, stat-wise, looks even worse)

So what should I do with SW? Get 0/1/1/1 so that I can get my little ship the best parts available and try for the Heavy X-wing quest (with a standard Z-95 - X-wings cost at least 100k), OR get 3/0/0/0 to get my hands on an X-wing ASAP, and furnish it with regularloot parts? Remember, I'm stuck farming tier one ships in Corellia System or Tatoo system (I can't handle the escort duty missions in Yavin 4 with my Z-95, I can't kill enemies fast enough). What would be a faster way to get to another good ship, going with crappy parts to build an X-wing or flying with better parts for a Heavy-X?

Or (please oh please no), will I have to resign myself to that wretched Y-wing? (and if so, what's a huge, huge, huge engine I can stick on its ass to get its agility tolerable?)

The reason that only astromech droids should be able to enhance ships... Think of a protocol droid:
"Oh, we're doomed!"
"I can't say how much I hate space travel!"
"The odds of surviving a direct assault on an Imperial Star Destroyer..."
"This is all your fault!"
"But sir!"

My personal thoughts are this:

Get yer butt up to 4/4/4/4 as a pilot.

Loot/farm nice parts during duty mishes. Check Kahl's loot thread here http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Eclipse&message.id=561808&view=by_date_ascending&page=1. Sell off the crap. Consider doing a merchant branch of artisan along with surveying to enable you to both store farmed parts and find said resources.

Buy cheap resources on the bazaar to assist in gathering grind materials for SW.

Plant harvesters on nice 80+% spawns of steel(doesnt matter quality for the moment)

Get a SW buff from a musician once you have a nice quantity of resources to grind SW then grind it to 4/0/0/0. This will enable ya to make Tier four chassis in practice mode to rapidly climb through SW's other branches.

Reverse engineer your parts to create something wonderful to add to your ships.

Spend time in galaxy trade/pilot/SW forums to see what is possible (we ALL like to brag about our finds/RE projects ).

When you are ready, do the rebel mission for the heavy xwing.

But please remember, unless someone respec'd to SW, it isnt a cheap grind. Nor is your first pilot badge easy, but it does get easier.

First, I'd recommend sticking with the Y-Wing, you'll learn a lot in it. First time I did rebel I tried to avoid it too, but it's actually a very solid ship. Get yourself in the mindset that it isn't a fighter, it's a bomber, and handles differently. It turns nicely at around 30-40% throttle - let those annoying TIEs come back to you.

On the subject of loot/cash/and ship costs - honestly, those shipwright prices aren't as high as they might seem at first. If you need to go out and farm parts - you'll find good stuff for your ship, and can sell the rest for cash to buy a ship. 450k for what should be (IMHO) a master cert ship that will handle better than anything else you'll fly isn't a bad deal.

My route as a rebel - I went straight for the X-Wing, fully outfitted it with loot/vendor bought stuff (and this was on a new server, so I didn't have any money except for what I made in space), and used that up to master.

Are you a pilot and not using Droid Commands?

Actually, sticking with a standard Z-95 teaches you quite a bit about flying if you stick it out to 3222. You'll learn to make your shots count and to avoid taking a lot of abuse, since 12k mass ain't much to work with.

The Y-Wing teaches about flying a heavy ship (LP a bit more so), and the Z-95 (standard) teaches about damage avoidance. Especially true since the Z-95 you get from the trainer can't use a FC or DI, for some odd reason ... so you're NOT using CtSS.

pay the 450k. you'll make it back and more, easily, likely before you even hit tier 3.
