1) Can freelance participate in PVP? (Other then duels)
2) Can a freelance gun for a imperial/rebel ship?

1) yes, they just can't enter the PvP zone as an overt member of a faction. They are still PvP enabled for whichever side they choose.
2) yes, as a gunner your personal profession and ground faction don't matter. Be warned though, if you go up with someone of the opposite faction, and they decide to go overt, you could probably suffer serious hurt to your faction standing, if you kill a lot of ships that way
