Quick question.
in the pilot screen, how can i get to be able to move my mouse around to click on my menu, comm, etc?
all i can do is move my fighter around, but when the npc pops up at the space station i can't click on my response without opening up a different menu item.
is there a button where i can go in and out of mouse ship control?

Also, where is a good place for a basic pilot to get xp? like against tie fighters or something?

Alt does it for me although interfaces vary.
As far as getting xp, at the beginning it might be a good idea to stick to destroy duty missions, and once you have some experience and better ship you can graduate to tier 4 ship spawns on Endor.
The Pilot FAQ is a very good guide for newbie pilots. I highly recommend looking it over.

By duty missions do you mean the ones given by the space station? or from somewhere else on the ground?
I tried a mission from the space station which was to destroy a freighter, but it was escorted by three y-wings, and in my ship, i couldn't even get their shields below 98%.

Usually your trainer will give you duty missions. Just choose the destroy ones since they are much more efficient as far as getting xp is concerned. They consist of wave after wave of enemy fighters. You can end them at any time, or they will end on their own after a large number of enemy ships killed.
