I hear a lot of people talking and saying how awesome this key is, yet when I press it in space nothing happens. What am I missing out on?

I believe the Z key is used to target the nearest or nexthostile player.
They're just PvP noobs trying to be cool.

Z key targets nearest hostile enemy player. Basically...it seems to only reliably work if that 'enemy' player is 3.5km away or within that area so constant spamming of that button is needed in deepspace or when overt.

My TAB button targets closest enemy by default. is that the same thing as the Z key?

i dont believe so, its nearest enemy PLAYER for the z key. Maybe the tab does it too as well as regular npc ships. Not sure about that seeing as how i dont pvp much lol

Tab is target nearest enemy of any kind, z cycles through enemy player ships. It'll start with the nearest, then hitting it again will target the next enemy player in range. Which is preferable to target nearest enemy player, since you'll have a better idea of how many you'll be up against.

Shift + Tab key locates the nearest enemy player. Z key cycles through enemy players.
I have Z key binded to my JS. Makes it easy if there are more then one Overt around me.
