How much abuse it can take before it goes offline from damage. Armor is the ability to soak damage from incoming shots without performance loss, hit point damage results in a loss of effectiveness equal to the amount of damage.
Only Engines and Reactors can be specifically targeted, but every component is subject to damage, depending on where on your ship the incoming shot lands.

Yeah I know that, but I figure it is sort of pointless because if you let your shields/armor get down to 0, you are probably going to die anyways.
