Hello all, I'm a Neutral pilot on the ShadowFire server. I'm on my level 4 tier missions (RSF)and I'm having trouble taking down gunboats solo. Do gunboats have any weaknesses or blind spots? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also if I'm a RSF pilot can I do Corsec Mission also?

If anyone needs help with neutral missions I would be glad to help, I'm not the greatest pilot but I'll willing to help my fellow pilots if I can. Maybe will can make Master Pilot together. Email Arro on ShadowFire if help is needed.

Thanks All

Happy Flying

Most gunboats that spawn for missions fly in a straight line without veering off to chase or shoot you.

The way to take these down is to target the engines, arc in towards the belly of the craft, pummel it for as long as you can manage (since it is still moving along its flight path one of its guns will eventually be clear for a shot on you), and repeat until the engines are out. Then you can safely approach the belly of the thing and shoot it until it explodes.

You can do duties for corsec missions, and you can help corsec pilots with their missions, but you can't go through the whole corsec mission sequence without dropping pilot and starting over.

The best method to kill mission gunboats that I have found is to strafe them. Target the reactor or engine. Hit them hard on the way in. Then boost away and corkscrew out. Shunt shields as necessary. Try to wait a sec or two to make sure your cap and boosters have recovered before starting the next run. After you disabled it you can come in behind and below it to finish the job.

If you need any help getting those tough missions done send me a tell on SF.

Targetting the reactor of gunboats doesn't actually do Jack, they'll keep moving even with a dead reactor=/.
No idea why, but the only way to stop them dead is to aim for the engine. Make sure to concentrate your fire on either the front or back (back is safer) and try staying underneath them. Weapon two is the trailing weapon on all Gunboats so kill that first, then you can happilly sit behind them blasting away.

These sound like they may be mission gunboats, and those DO track you. Probably the best way to handle them is to bring a friend, and play decoy for the gunboats while the friend sits in the blind spot and blasts the engine. Barring that, you'll have to strafe them, as given above.

true, most Imperial and Rebel gunboats fly in a nice straight line...

it's the neutral gunboats that will actually manuever and chase you down...they're fast too.

Not sure I agree with all of what is posted here.

- Gunboats seem to be weaker from the front, come at them full speed targeting the engine and then boost away, keep flying until you've shunted your shield energy back 100%, then turn for another pass.

-By now, said gunboat should be headed your way again. Again, come straight at the gunboat head on with your guns blazing. As you pass them boost to full speed and jink (wiggle) away.

This works well for both Imperial and Rebel style gunboats. Never stay still, and if your shields take too many hits, feel free to boost out of range quickly.

All mission spawn gunboats (regardless of faction) that I fought spun to fight me. Only natural spawns will keep going in a straight line.

For natural spawn gunboats that fly straight, do as mentioned above, arching up at their belly and going for that first turret, then the engine (unless it's a rebel GB, then just go straight for the engine).

As a note - if the shields or armor ever dip below 50%, you're wasting shots. Try to focus on only the front or back of the gunboat whenever possible.

I personally deal with gunboats by going on strafing runs from their tail (the 5 o'clock blind spot from the rear, on the imp ones), hugging it as long as I can then pulling off and boosting away while shunting. It seems to work pretty well, though you'll want all level 3 overloads+ up for this (you could probably do it without, but this makes it a lot easier/faster). Bear in mind this is what I do in an X-Wing (normal).

If I was flying a bomber on the other hand, I'd shift shield charge forward and go screaming towards them while blazing away, and just do several passes like that (which works for oppressors too, if you're having a hard time with the rear turret).

Edit: I forgot to add, on the gunboats (especially imp ones), go select the rear-facing turret as the first component you take out - it makes things a LOT easier, especially since the ship still fires when it loses its generator/engine.
