I was curious as to everyone's thoughts about the fact that 2 of the 3 pilot groups called "neutral" aren't really neutral. It seems that only the Smuggler's Alliance is truly neutral, as CorSec is allied with the Rebellion and the RSF are allied with the Empire. When first reading about JTL, the information made it sound like a privateer was just that - able to take missions for everyone. It wasn't until after I joined the RSF and got a ways into it that I realized I was allied with the Empire (not a good thing for a Wookiee).
I found it interesting that the patch notes considered the fact that a neutral RSF pilot could attack Imperial targets to be a "bug" that was fixed. I joined the RSF because my home is on Naboo and I wanted to help protect the planet from pirates and such. I get the Imperial connection with the Emperor, but I personally think I should have the option of attacking Imperial targets if I want to, since I'm supposed to be a privateer. I can understand not being able to attack them during one of my missions, but I don't see why I can't just find some random TIE fighters to shoot or help out friends on their missions where they have to fight Imperial targets.
I thought the fact that I had the OPTION to attack an Imperial target to be the perfect balance. If you wanted to roleplay the RSF/Empire thing, then simply don't attack them. But at least it left open the ability to choose a different path, which to me, is the essence of what a privateer is. It bothers me that I may have to drop all my skills to start over again as a member of the Smuggler's Alliance to truly be neutral, simply because the whole neutral alliance thing wasn't outlined clearly when I started (I don't see it mentioned anywhere in the manual). I've heard reports (but none confirmed) that if you hit master pilot and start over again, you get double the xp the next time through. That's all very nice, but it still would require starting all over again.
What does everyone else think about the fact that most of the neutral pilot groups aren't neutral at all?

NO corsec is completely neutral!!
I dont know about SA but i think with all of my knowledge they are reb.
I am master corsec thingy and i had the option of taking either corvettes and i could attack imps and rebs
*P.S.* You get missions to beat up both the Imps and Rebs so.
Duty mission "Go show the imps that we Corsec are completely neutral in this war" (or something like that)

SA is absolutly neutral, we are able to help all other pilots doing missions, for us every factionPvE ship is a possible target ... RSF do not have Imp PvE ship as possible targets and CorSec should have that "problem" with Reb PvE ships ... for the master mission all privateers have to chose one side imp/reb to get the mission.

You have made the thread from your experience and you are not wrong about the RSF, but you have assumed too much about the other Freelance Paths.
RSF does seem to have 'vs Imperial' issues. That seems to be intentional and makes some sense, but it is the only way that any Freelancer can be considered faction aligned.
CorSec runs (I went to Master on the Path) missions against both Imperial and Rebel NPCs. Many times you will go from an anti-Imp mission directly into an anti-Reb mission. For their Master mission, CorSec Pilots are asked which faction they want to help. NO other path gets this choice, not even the Smuggler's Alliance. If anything, SA should be considered more Rebel than CorSec due to the Master mission choice vs lack of choice.
Otherwise, there is nothing stopping Pilots of either of those two Paths from attacking anything in Kessel (except for the Deep Space perma-overt bug) and choosing either side to join in Deep Space.
