You also have to remember not everyone can fly 1789* hehe
The other problem is the horrendous lag it creates when starts to fire 80 of it's guns. Yesterday I could not engage a player hunting around it as my FPS dropped to 3 when a squadron of rebel NPCs were chased by the ISD's fighters and fired upon by it's turrets.

I cannot recall soloing the ISD was harder before, but you are quite right: it is easy to solo now. Tomo elaborated on this a bit lately in one of his posts. He sad it is very hard to find a balance between 40 turrets hit insta-death and soloable ISD with current hyper-maneuverable fighters. Maybe fighter escorts might be tuned to give it more protection and of course brave imperial pilots who would defend them.

Yeah, that thing is supposed to have 72 fighters inside it. I'd like to see more than half a dozen or so at a time.
You're right about the FPS rate when that bad boy opens up... Holy hell, what a lightshow. Thankfully my machine's pretty killer, with two instances of SWG running, I never dropped below 9 fps. Not great, but I still wiped the secondary shield out during the slowdown.
How did I get credit? I was the Pilot of the YT-1300 that my friends and I were crewing when we went up against the ISD.
No blind spots - no ordnance - just flying, Shunting, and a pair of Turrets firing.

Ok, how about this... I went out to DS with a few friends, and I got credit for the ISD kill. No big deal, right? I never fired a shot at it. That's right, I caused no direct damage to the ISD.

Well, that makes sense, really. Do you think I'm going to drag a crew up there and get them shot to pieces with nothing to show for it? With xp for the crew, I'm never without volunteers for Ops or repair duty.

Whenever I get into DS, the second thing I check after closest enemy player is wether or not the ISD is firing at something. If it is, I usually go over and destroy it. If I'm on my way over and find an imp I ask them to take care of whatever is causing the ISD to fire. I'd rather not have to wait for the DS reset if I don't have to. Is it just me, or is the lag caused by the ISD worse from 5km away than from right up next to it?

You're absolutely correct. I believe this is due to your system "seeing" more of the shots firing at one time from further out and trying to render them.
The first ISD I saw in DS was going off like that, I went ahead and finished it off. I really did not see what it was shooting at. Probably a Rebel Pilot that went LD from the lagstorm it caused.
