I want to get me an ARC-170.
As Storm Squardron, can I resign from the Empire. Join the rebellion and still fly my tie? Or do I lose all piloting skills as well?
I know quest involves shooting down TIEs, but I'll get a freelancer to do that part me.
I should be back to Imperial in a hour or so.

No. You cannot leave the Imperial ground forces until you surrender your pilot skills. If you try, it will just send you back to Private and set you On Leave.

The good news is that you have a bonus to your XP gain (I'm assuming you've made Ace already), so if you do decide to do it, you can work your way through the next pilot profession much quicker. And if you Ace that one as well, you'll come back to the Imperial side gaining triple XP. Buy a Heavy TIE and load it up with high level goodies before you surrender pilot, and you'll have some really smooth sailing through whatever Imperial profession you come back to.
