You can only use "Starfighter" cargo holds on small ships.

On POB ships (Y-8, Nova, YT-1300, Decimator), you can use the heavier POB Cargo Holds.

Make sure you are using the right type of cargo hold.

Also, remember you have to land and click on your ship in your datapad to unload your cargo.

Oh, to answer your original question, you have to have a cargohold to hold asteroid resources.

You get asteroid resources by shooting asteroids in space with mining lasers, shooting the chunks that break off into smaller chunks, then blasting the remaining pieces or tractoring them in.
