I am sure that i am not the first person to sugest this but it seems like a good idea to me...

What would you think about the chassis of any given star fighter haveing base stats. Modifiers to Speed, Mass, Pitch, Yaw, Armor, etc. They the components would then build on those stats. My problem is that there is no difference in useing an X-wing vs. an A-wing, vs. a B-wing other then the total mass that a ship can hold. An A-wing was supposed to be slick as snot and able to out manuver a Tie Fighter. An X-wing was a power puncher, with good speed and great handeling, the B-wing was supposed to be a flying brick in space. Poor speed and week manuverability, but is was suppoed to have gob tons of fire power.

Ship Speed Pitch Roll Yaw Damage

A-Wing +100 +20+20 +20-250 Low mass keeps limits weapons but Manuver bonus makes it easy to get away from other ships

X-Wing +0 +10+10+10 +100

B-Wing -25 -10-10 - 10+500 High mass and fire power make up for poor manuverability

This is just kind of an example so dont flame the numbers they are just here to give an example.

...uh .... have you tried the different ships?

They allready have different chassis values.

Even with the same equip in all three, they handle very differently.

The chassis have a yaw/pitch/roll value asigned to them. This is not the same y/p/r you can modify with engine stats, this y/p/r is an acceleration value. For example an A-wing can turn one direction, then imediatly go to full turn in the other direction. A B-wing meanwhile can take several seconds to change direction. The X-wing is somewhere in between.

As far as mods to weapon power or armor, it's not necessary. The mass and number of hardpoints take care of that.

You can't put a lot of armor on an A-wing because it will seriously reduce your mass available for other components. With weapons the A-wing does't have the mass to carry heavy guns, the X-wing while it has 3 gun hardpoints has to ballance the mass of it's weapons, the B-wing on the other end has 4 gun points and enough mass to really make those 4 guns hurt.
