2. Countermeasures: Do I launch CM when a missile is incoming? Or is it automatic? I have pressed the Joystick3 button when missiles are incoming, but no verbage appers.
3. I have heard tell that you can target the engines and reactor and such using the [ and ] keys. Am I to understand if ENGINE is selected when I do damage it is done to the enemy's engine? So I don't actually target the engines?
I'm just having a bitching time [I'm 0-0-0-0] finishing the Black Sun Ace mission, as he is tier 2. I got his shields down to 14% after hitting him with the 8th missile, but had shot my 'wad' at that point.

1. Missiles: I loaded 8 packs of 8 missiles each into my missile launcher. After I fired 8 there were no more available. Can another pack be loaded in space? in combat? And what happened to my other 7 packs?

1. In my experience, when I load a new missile pack, it replaces the missile pack that was in there. If I am down to 3 missiles left, I will load a fresh pack, and the old one just disappears. So, my best guess is you wasted 7 missile packs. =(
You have to land to reload missiles, until you can request in space resupply. These are not as good as crafted missiles though.
2. You have to manually launch the CM's.
3. If you watch the information about the target (in the upper right-hand corner of the screen), you will see the current state of his shields, armor, etc. When you use [ and ], you will notice this indicator begins to provide additional information about the specific part you have targeted. It does not change how you aim, as this targeting happens automatically. So, no, you don't have to actually aim at the engines.
Glad you are having fun. Pilot is one of the best parts of the game. =)
