Thread: Organized my first event, learned a few things

I had my first experienceorganizing a space PvP event last night on Lowca.

The complete write up, with event announcement, commentary and post-mortem report is here. For those looking to get started running events, here are a few thoughts on what worked and what didn't.

Voice Communication: I leased a teamspeak server from Lightspeed at 50 bucks for 6 months and set it up for public accessibility. As far as I'm concerned it paid for itself the first night. Voice chat forces a level of congeniality on people that you don't get from text and is highly effective for faction-only strategizing across guild lines. Having a single server specifically for the event community is a lot better than having several guild-only servers.

Text Communication: We used a user defined public chat channel for all critical event-wide communication and it worked beautifully. Organizing across factions would have been much more challenging without it. As a bonus the channel remains popular in the aftermath of the event, tightening up the pilot community and facilitating deep space rendezvous' and such.

Engagements: Prior to the event some alliance guys stripped all the guns off the ISD, which solved the lag problem and enabled us to use the star destroyer as a battlefield. While it was cool to maneuver around, the shield dazzle lag was too much to handle. We were much happier with the quality of the skirmishes when we moved them to open space.

Balance: In the early going we had far more alliance pilots than imperial, which was a really frustrating problem to work around. Pilots had to sit out of some engagements and communication suffered. People dropped out of frustration. Once we were down to about 8 pilots per side, however, everything coalesced and we had a little over an hour of really good action.

Ships: Of the 15-16 core pilots there in the end, three were in JSFs, the rest were in heavy X, A, heavy tie, interceptor, vaksai, ARC and tie-advanced chassis'. The advantage enjoyed by the JSF guys was extremely marked. In the future our events will disallow the JSF/Bel/RGI rather than just discourage them. The great thing about this is, most pilots preferred the canon-esque chassis. Getting good participation while disallowing the unbalanced ships won't be a problem.

On Bria last night we had one of our first space pvp events. We didn't do it in DS, so there wasn't a lag issue and we barred all prequel fighters from it. And to mitigate decay problems we all agreed to not target engines at all. So, we had classic JTL fighters fighting each other. It was very cool seeing a squadron of heavy ties, advanced, bombers, and oppressors fighting awings and xwings. We also had a pob battle with each pob using only lvl 1 weapons going on at the same time. It was a great start to Bria's space pvp events and we are all looking forward to more. We are hoping to keep the prequel fighters out of it since JSFs would be unbalancing... Awings in good pilots hands are hard enough to deal with.

I was one of the pilots fighting in this event and it was great fun and a super learning experience for me, i am master pilot flying a vasksai and got my butt whooped a whole lot but it was great fun and has inspired me to seek out parts for re uber stuff.

I dont know about other servers but it seems on lowca there is not really much invovlment in space other than that required to finish various quests im am so glad that raja had gotten this together.

good job dude

Now's the time to convince Bria's pilots to come to Starsider--Bria characters get a free character transfer with items and credits due to the problems with that server.

BTW, that character transfer doesn't apply to FS characters, so don't feel too badly about it.

Actually the plus side is that some of my friends from Bria are thinking of moving to SS now so yay for it.
