I.E. Damage that can never be repaired? If so, how can you tell how much an item has decayed?

Whenever parts of your ship take damage (being blasted to shreds is considered 100% damage) and you don't repair via the DeepSpace trick, your components have their armour and hitpoints reduced. This also is true when you overload them.

The very same also is true with your ship itself. Anyways, while this sounds bad, it actually doesn't matter a lot. The only effect you might experience is that some of your gear can't be used with overload 4 any more... but overload 3 always works and usually is good enough to do the job, anyways.

So in the end, the only part you should replace regularily due to decay is armour, if you look at some nice Mark IV armour which at the start had 1800 points of armour and realize that it has 500 points of protection left, you know what i mean. With anything else, use it unless you come over something better, ignore the decay.

(My krayt itself is down to below 200 hull... i still fly it and it handles greatly. If armour fails, i am dead, but honestly, i'd be dead with 3000 hull, too... especially when flying overt in this ship. )

Parts will suffer a 10% decay loss whenever you repair them. That is to say, if a part has 100 points of damage on it, when you repair it, you'll lose 10 points of permanent condition.

However, if the total damage repaired won't result in more than 10 HP and/or armor condition lost, you won't see any permanent loss.

If you'd like to weigh in on the subject, we had a focus thread a few months back about this that should still be relevant. Should have been called "Focus: PVP Decay" etc., or something similar, and started by me. There were a lot of good suggestions and ideas inside it pertaining to decay and its role in space.

Yeah, and look where that went. Maybe they should call you correspondants "mushrooms."
