I bought a launcher and pack o missiles. Loaded them up and went into space. got a lock on a nearby freighter and fired.... no damage to shields. So I thought hmm, maybe it only damages armor... so I blast away the sheilds and fire another proton torpedo.... still no damage.

What is it that proton torpedos do if they don't do damage? Do they disable a ships systems for a short period of time? Are frieghters invincible to proton torpedos?

What are the stats of the missles you bought. such as damage and effectivness?

Here is some good Info snipped from the "Zigmund's Shipwright Guide" sticky that tells about the different missle types.

Missiles

  • Concussion Missiles

    • Highly effective versus shields, does zero amage to armor.
    • Comes in Mark I, II, III (Levels 2, 5, 8) variants.

  • Image-Rec Missiles

    • Advanced missiles with advanced targeting system
    • Tracks longer than standard missiles and avoids standard countermeasure systems.
    • Equally effective versus shields and armor.
    • Comes in Mark I and II (Levels 4 and 6) variants.

  • Proton Missiles

    • Lightweight missiles, which allows the pilot to carry more in his arsenal
    • Moderately effective versus shields and armor.
    • Comes in Mark I, II, III, IV (Levels 1, 3, 6, and 9) variants.

  • Seismic

    • Highly effective versus armor, weak versus shields.
    • Comes in Mark I, II, III (Levels 3, 6, 9) variants.

  • Space Bomb

    • High yield missiles that are slow and bulky.
    • Easily deterred by countermeasures and lose track easily.
    • Effective versus capital ships and slow moving/unaware ships.
    • Comes in Mark I and II (Level 5 and 10) variants.

Low level missels wont do anyything but tickle your target. just FYI.

Anyway, think of photon torepdo's as the blaser equivilant of missles
they do minor to moderate shield/armor damage.

Think of seismec missles as disruptor blasters, and think of concussion missles as ion blasters.

Think of space bombs as spacebombs and Image-rec as advanced missles from the Sim series.

Proton missiles are a compromise - jack of all trades, master of none.

Protons may have a nominal minimum and maximum damage value but they also have a modifier of somewhere around 0.45-0.5 against both shields and armour, thus dramatically reducing their effect. If you were unlucky enough to get hits around the low end of the scale and the shield/armour of the target was comparatively high then you may not have noticed much effect.

In addition I have seen situations where there was an apparent hit, but twitch and countermeasures meant that the target received no damage.

As a previous contributor said if you want something effective against shields go for concussion missiles. If you want a good all-rounder with bite (albeit with lower number of shots) go for space bombs.

I have always found protons useful against faster, more agilevessels (such as A-wings or TIEs) when I'm flying a slower and lower YPR craft. It is also important to find the ship configuration that suits your style - if you don't like protons, then they may not be suitable for you, try another type of missile; I personally don't like seismics (effective against armour) but I know quite a few people do. Unfortunately you aren't on Chimaera otherwise I'd let you try each type.

I've never been a fan of protons either. Personally I go with either Image rec's or spacebombs depending on what I'm hunting after.

If it's fast fighters or pvp I like the image rec's, for large target hunting like GB's I like the spacebombs.
