ya, thats right, the 2nd best ship for space mining.

The best ship is obviously the new mining POB. However, it's a good bet that to be efficent you'll need a crew.. and that is not always avaiable. ( Espeically for the indpendant unguilded types such as myself)

So that leaves you with looking for the 2nd best ship.

Now the criteria for space mining, we need:
1.) cargo hold
2.) Mining laser
3.) Tractor beam
4.) Self defense weapon against NPC pirates spawing at you.

Now the space mining article said you can use a mining laser for self defense , but ill wager its nowhere near as effective, efficient, or deadly as a good ole blaster made for the job.

Based on this criteria we can guess that well need
- High mass
- several hardpoints.

Now, working with what we have curretnly, im thinking the Krayt Gunship or B wing fall into this role well.

WIth the krayt, assuming you have a someone in the turret, might acutally be the most efficient. That turret means someone can focus on something, and the pilot focus on something else. This just smells efficiency in my mind.

However the if you dont have a gunner, the B wing is probably the better choice. 240K mass (as opposed to the kryats 210) and 4 hardpoints. Its major detractor however is its maneuverablity. Its acceleration and decelration specificaly. ANd when hopping around from asteroid to astroid (if this mining will be anything like Eve or E&B) that might be a PITA.

So which do you think is better for mining? Krayt? Bwing? or something else?

Aren't all the new elite mining components 250k mass?

That pretty much rules out every ship BUT MP ships.

Elite i think means MP ship only to begin with. (new MP ship components) According to the article sony posted, any ship can mine, just some will be better at it then others.

Right...meaning that we may not be able to fit that tractor beam onboard. We'll just have to fly around and collect the ore.

It will probably be best to get a crew for the mining ship, so I might not even bother with mining solo. From what I understand you need the tractor beam to get at the really good stuff, but I could be mistaken. I'm looking forward to setting up NorRam's Mining Co.

Space mining may end up being a thing for guilds to do on any large scale! A lot will dpend on how many, how agressive and what level the pirates trying to stop you spawn at. If it's anything at all like other JTL missions you'll have to deal with wave after wave after wave of these pirates! Then there's factors like how long does it take to fill up a hold and how much cargo can you actually carry.

I look forward to giving it a try, but I suspect it'll be more profitable for adventure than credits!

Multi-Player is what brings the SWG world alive (real people, other players, make SWG so wonderfully dynamic). I just don't treat SWG like it was a chat room, I don't play to socialize and I resent forced grouping!"

Think i'll cut in past some of the article in question to provide some clarity (or as much as us non beta ppl are privy to)

http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/content.jsp?page=Rage%20of%20the%20Wookiees:%20Space%20Mining

( All types of space ships can have a cargo hold, but keep an eye on your ship's total mass if you have a small craft. If you have a smaller fighter, you may have to choose between a cargo hold or a piece of equipment you may need for heavy combat.

Heavier ships and multi-passenger crafts won't have any problems adding a cargo hold and if you really want to get into the mining business, then you might want to start thinking about getting yourself a Y-8 Mining Vessel )

**Note, light, heavy ships and MP ships are mentioned. The Y-8 is a no brainer of course.

( Once you have laid your hands on a cargo hold, the next thing you will need are Mining Lasers. Mining lasers are a special weapon designed specifically for mining asteroids. Before launching into space to mine ore, a pilot will have to equip a mining laser into a ship's normal weapon slot. Mining lasers will take up a weapon slot, but they can be used to defend yourself if you get attacked by pirates or mercenaries. Its main purpose, however, is to blast asteroids apart and mine for valuable ore.

The other key piece of equipment you will need to mine space ore is a Tractor Beam. Once an asteroid has been blasted up into the tiniest chunks of ore, a tractor beam is used to haul the ore into your cargo hold. Tractor beams need to be equipped before launching your vessel and also take up a weapon slot.)

***From this we can derive that we need at least 3 hardpoints.
- tractor beam
- mining laser
- blaster

( After mining the asteroid into the smallest possible chunks, they can be harvested in two possible ways. The first way to gather the ore is simply to blast them away. Once they are destroyed, the gathered ore will accumulate in your cargo hold. The second way to gather the ore is to use a tractor beam. By using the tractor beam, space miners will be able to get a higher yield of ore )

*** So tecnically we dont need a tractor beam, however for a higher yeild it would be desireable. Im having mining flashbacks from UO just thinking about it without a tractor beam for some reason.

Hence, im pretty sure you can use just about any ship, however, how much you mine is going to vary by how heavy the ship is.

My Mining Ship is going to b an X-wing....Got a slot for each "gun" and enough mass to Squeze it in(asuming they don't make the mining components 25k+ each)....Then when i have the stuff i need mined, a Heavy-X(or one of the new fighters depending on thier obtainability and stats).

However, i am expecting they will make the actual Cargo(Loot Ore)a Mass factor on your ship(if you mine 10k ore, then your mass increases by 10K)....so theY-8 and current MP ships will likely be the best choices, with the heavy "gunships" coming inafter that.

well the mining laser and tractor beam are going to take up 2 gun slots right there, so your looking at a minimum of 3 weapon slots on the ship if you are going to be able to mount a blaster for self defense. im thinking the bwing will be the best for it just because of the 4 weapon mounts. imps are screwed because none of thier ships have 3 gun slots, unless one of the new ships does. i suppose you could use a tie-opp with the gun mounts for the mining gear and some mkII spacebomb racks to deal with any npcs that try to harrass you, but then your spending money on ammo.

From what I know, I think you summed it up nicely. The Krayt and B should both be capable Miners, with the B a preferable solo ship while the Krayt might get an edge with a second person.

If the goal is to find the best solo ship, you might also consider the KSE. Weapon slot quantity, lots of mass, but better handling than most heavy ships could make it a contender.

I am curious to see how many people eventually decide to keep a Nova/YT/Deci outfitted rather than a Y-8. The Y-8 is obviously a more efficient Miner, but a POB ship could come close while also having other functionality.

For me, having loaded out both ships, yet still not knowing the mass of Cargo holds, at a guess I'd say a Krayt would be easier to set up as a 1person miner. I tend to have 2 loadouts for my Krayt anyway, single player and dual player, so simply removing the 4 gun and replacing it with a hold (if the masses are right) would probably be easy.

Also, a guess while knowing nothing of the practical nature of catching rocks, I should think in a single player ship, a certain amount of chasing and catching larger rocks might prove more efficient than tractoring, and in that case, the more agile ship, with better accel/decel would shine. I think the Krayt wins again.

Having flown the Y-8 and such.. honestly here's my list in order

1. ARC-170 with a crew of three. forward firing weapon self-defense, upper rear turret for tractor beam, lower turret rear for mining laser.

2. Krayt. Crew of 2. 2 forward firing weapons for defense, 1 forward firing mining laser, turret crew member with tractor beam.

3. Y-8 I put this further down due to manuevorability. forward firing mining laser, upper turret tractor, lower turret defense. (BTW.. this sucker is MONSTROUS on the inside)

4. BWing/TIE Bomber, Oppressor.. basically everything that isn't a light fighter would fit this slot.
