Hi there guys.
This has been on the edge of my mind for the past few whatevers now and I don't think its been approached before has it? But anyway, I was thinking about engine velocity. At the moment...we know a speed. Our engines have a magnitude for e.g a 79 top speed engine or a 92 top speed engine.
However....79 what exactly? Bananas?
Well we know that ingame distance is measured in metres which is a nice all round metric unit to be using so it'd only make sense to me if velocity was using a metric unit too.
So I went up into spac and flew around a bit.
It occurred to me to fly around at a speed of 100 to see how the factors worked out.
I set up two waypoints 1000 metres apart and then ran tests flying between them about ten or so times and timing how long it took me.
Bare in mind the measurements weren't totally accurate, but I think I worked it out that our speeds...or rather velocities [if indeed this unit is correct] is measured in metres per second so an engine running at 100 [or 1000 as it reads on the slider control by the target reticle] is doing 100 metres per second which is the same as 6000 metres per minute which is the same as 360000 metres per hour.
To tidy that up some, that'd be 360km/h which for all of the normal people who use mph [miles per hour] would be equal to 223.7mph which isn't that fast.....but is perfectly good for balanced gameplay so I'm not by any means complaining.
Hum...see thats what the prospect of server downtime does to me. Makes me experiment pointlessly
.
Anyway...thats what I think it is. Correct me if I'm wrong. I know that in game sliek X wing vs TIE fighter the unit for speed..or rather 'starship acceleration' wa smeasured in MGLT [megalights per second?] whatever that is.

sweet that means my YT1300 has a top speed of 351.55575 and if i could fit my fastest stuff on my duneliz (w/o anything other than the reactor, engine, booster, and droid running wo4 and ro4) it will top out at 421MPH or 1874.56 mp10 sec
thats just crazy

I was under the impression that total mass didnt have any effect on handling or performance. So it should do the same top speed whether you run it bare or fully loaded. Still, thats PDQ (pretty damn quick) mate.
