...how do you empty the cargo hold thingy so you get the asteroid resources in your inventory? thx.

Land, and then open your datapad. Click & hold on your mining ship and then select unload.

When you land, open your Datapad, and use the radial menu on your ship. The 6th or 7th option (can't remember exactly) is something like "Empty Cargo" or "Empty Hold".... something to that effect.
