Thread: POB Upgrade Idea

The topic of missiles just came up in my PvE thread, and I began to think on different ways Ive see rocketry applied in other games.

There was one first person shooter I played where the rocket launchers were actually fly by wire, and when you launched, you controlled the bugger with a nose camera view. It was a lot of fun now I remember it, and here's my thought about using it in JtL.

Install a special missile tube that holds these things. This missile tube is under the control of the Ops Chair, not the pilot. The rockets work similarly to what I described above, launch (lockon not needed) and a low resolution nose cam view appears for the copilot. He then has about 15-20 seconds to get the missile close to, or hit a target. The rocket can be blown up at any time, if you're far off course, or to do minor blast radius damage if its a target you can only get close to but n ot manage to hit.

I think this missile tube ought to have a really slow refire rate, close to 60 seconds, but the missile tube should be reloadable from inside the POB ship (new job for the repair crew). Possibly even allow it to take any sort of missile rack, so you can load in different types of rocket on the fly for different jobs.

I think this concept would be one way to improve the capabilities of POBs, along with a lot of the other things we've been discussing.

Not bad. Thinking like torpedos?

I'd like to see another resistance built into weapons - vs. Capitol Ships. Player POBs, ISD, Freedom Station would all be flagged as Cap ships, while missions vessels and vettes would remain the same. The only weapons that would have a high vs. cap ships would be big level 10 guns. Sooo....

Fighters become less effective against POB ships, without the use of ordinance or the heavier bomber fighters. And if someone wanted to build a ship around a level 10 gun (big extra heavy elite types) more power to them, be like that Wing Commander ship with the plasma cannon.

Then throw in a heavy ordinance that only fits on larger ships (bombers, POB) that works like a torpedo, with a high ratio vs. cap ships.

60 second refire makes it useless, POBs usually die in 6, the odds are most missiles would be so fast an Ops officer wouldn't be able to control it, or too slow to save the ship, in which case it goes off harmlessly into space after the POB is a flaming pile.

In PvE, there are no targets needing such a missile.

Like I said, this is just oneidea among many, obviously the survivablility of POBs is the prime issue, but Im just thinking of ways to add effectiveness to the crew without becoming unbalanced. Maybe 60 seconds is too, long, but what I meant was 60seconds from the time you fire, so that's 60 sec minus20sec flight time. I'm just tossing out numbers to get the concept across, not in any way intending them as hard targets.

The idea of stand off firepower is reasonable, but this kind of capacity diverts attention from my Ops Officer I'd rather have focused on CapShunting and tweaking Droid Programs (I've been known to adjust them in situ as conditions change).

Plus, the kinds of speed and level of visibility I deal with against small fighters would requirethe ability to tag a target from damned near halfway across the sector.
