"Capital ships are comming in the next one. We can already have ship captains (any ace pilot), engineers (shipwrights), and pilots. We don't really have a need for security positions on these ships"

I seriously doubt Capital ships are coming. A Corvette? Maybe.. but it will resemble anything of a capital ship? No. It will have an interior, but the captain's chair will be a pilot's chair, the two pilot chairs at the front will be two co-pilot chairs and there'll be a few turrets. Thats all there will be.

There is no "being a captain" of a ship as you basicaly have no "crew" save a copilot and two gunners. The "engineers" are the "shipbuilders" ... "eningeers" are crewman that sit in engineering messing with your ship's engines. We wont get that, we get a copilot seat with "engine overload".

And you want what? In Star Wars, we don't tinker with engines, reverse the polarity of anything, or worry about the holodeck. Star Wars vs. Star Trek. Very few people live on their ships. They are war vessels. The closest thing we need to engineers are players to run around and repair conduits and such. And if you expect to see a group of four people running a Vette, I think you'll be very very mistaken.

Go watch Empire Strikes Back. Tell me Han ISN'T tinkering with the hyperdrive. While ya at it, read several books from the Han series that describe in detail Han messing with the Falcon's engine to improve it. Then, while ya at it, further your dabbing with actual "Star Wars" cannon and see all the descriptions of an engineering deck of an ISD.

The "Star Wars" were never purely fighter vs fighter. There isn't even a single battle in any of the 6 movies that was fighter vs fighter. They ALL included captial ships or atleast a space station, and those captial ships and space stations required crews. And those crews had functions. And they were not sitting in a copilot's chair spamming "cap to shield".

This is a "ROLE PLAY" game, it is not a "COMBAT" game. Its about time the developers realise that and give it some "ROLE PLAY" aspects rather than dumping us with more versions of a combat system.

Things that could be done:

  • Add an engineering room to these capital ships (the vette dungeon has one) and allow a player to enter an Engineering mini game to improve the capabilities of the engine.

  • Add a sensor station where a pilot can enter a sensor mini game to pull off some kind of sensor relay trick or improved range or something

  • Add a Captain's Chair that allows the person sitting in it to see some kind of birds-eye-view of an 8km-ranged map so that the captain of a ship can coordinate and plan strikes by seing the battle

  • Allow other players to dock with the capital ship and board it

  • Add a starship terminal inside the captial ship to allow players that have docked and boarded to launch.

Maybe then, things would be good. Maybe then we'd finaly have something in Space worthy of the title "Star Wars".

So I heard this game called "Star Wars Galaxies" coming out way back in 2000 or something, and thought to myself "wow thats cool! I can finaly do all the things I enjoy doing in games like Jedi Knight and X-Wing Alliance but do it with other people online AND get to role play! awsome!"

So I sit through all the development phases of the game, basking in the glory of the old forums where we played jokes on Q-3PO and made funny posts like my "SWG Jedi system revealed - Become a Jedi through a serioes ofPaper Scissor Stones (or whatever you americans call it)" only to find out the game was being limited to planets and that it would be about 6 months after release that space would finaly get added. I shrugged it off, I continued with the fun of the forums and eventualy got into beta. Yep this seemed like a really cool game! Not bad on the eye, seemed pretty fun, had lots of people to hang with, needed a lot of "content" still but hey that would get added after launch right?

So it launched, I buy the game, 6 months later finaly get a mount and a vehicle so that it doesnt take a year to travel from Bestine to Anchorhead, still eagerly awaiting the Space part of the game that we are now being told wont be out until a year after release. Its still a good game though right? Lacking content, but thats gonna come soon!

A year later and we finaly get a glimpse of space. Wow! stunning graphics! Can't wait to get into that X-Wing and fly around Star Destoyers and other large ships! Hell I want to Captain a Star Destoyer and do all the things you see in the movies! 6 months later, nearing christmas, Space finaly arrives. Do we get everything we hoped for? No. Do we get an intense "space combat flight sim"? Barely. Can we "relive the movies in our OWN story!" Sure, if the movies consisted of 10 small space zones with nothing in them except a hugely rediculous amount of static NPC fighters flying in circles waiting for someone stupid enough to fly through them. Where were the Star Destroyers? Where were the iconic Star Wars space battles? Where were the rebel raids on transport vessels and Imperial strikes on Space Stations? Yay.. deep space... woohoo.. that really answered my question didnt it. "Deep Space" .. a zone with even MORE static NPC ships flying in circles waiting for someone to fly through them with ONE space station and ONE Star Destroyer that doesn't move and can barely be arsed to shoot at you.

I see the Star Trek Online game FAQ being flashed around their website with things like:

  • Command your own starship!

  • Have an entire guild crew your ship!

  • Be an Engineer, a captain, a pilot or a security chief!

  • Fly around 100's of systems taking on many different missions including lots of different forms of combat!

  • Launch from your starship in shuttles and take them down to the planet's surface

  • etc etc etc

And then look at what we've been given and think to myself "we doesn't this game have that?". No, I don't want to play Star Trek. I don't want to be Captain Kirk or have gimpy ears like Spock or walk around with a Cornish Pasty stuck to my forehead... I want to be Captain Piett, Admiral Ackbar, Captain Needa... the things we SEE in the Star Wars movies.

Why. Why are we stuck with suicide transports that are so under-powered compared to fighters that they die in one hit. Why are inconic "Star Wars" vessels like Star Destroyers not really in-game? Why can we not be what we see in the movies and command a large vessel and take it into a large space battle against other large vessels? Why can we not have an entire guild run a starship launching fighters from it or just chilling in the rec-room? Why are we stuck to 11 space zones that are just full of boring spinning NPCs? Why does everything in this game have to be orientated around combat? Why does a "Star Wars" game not include the "wars" in the "stars"? Why do I have to make these stupid posts?

/end rant

Star Trek claims that they'll have "many different missions including lots of different forms of combat!", but in the end, all you'll ever have to do is reverse the polarity of something to finish the mission.

Actually, their FOTM will be the "Wesley Crusher" template, the vulcans will all be spamming hate tells to every one, and the Klingons will be nerfed all to hell

Anyway, for the OP, sure they list having all that, as did SWG. But having it in a design document and having it actually programmed and playable are two different things. Trust me, they won't be launching with that.

Because SOE knows how to keep these sorts of games running. If you give everyone everything at the begining, what's going to sell your expansion packs? Capital ships are comming in the next one. We can already have ship captains (any ace pilot), engineers (shipwrights), and pilots. We don't really have a need for security positions on these ships. Star Trek is not very likely to have much of a ground game, so "taking your shuttle down to the surface" is likely to spawn you in a very Kashyyyk-like zone where you can only wander so far. You'll need your away team to finish whatever mission they're on and get back up to your ship, probably with some sort of time limit to it. I'm curious about their claim of "lots of different forms of combat!", because there aren't that many things you can do. You can photon torpedo someone, or you can blast them with lasers. Or maybe fire tribbles into their cargo hold. The point is that I don't see "lots of different forms of combat!" panning out.

Could SWG be better? Yes. But don't start tossing around ideas from a design document and try to compare those to a finished game.

The short answer is that SOE caters to the masses.

Part of what makes Starwars good, is that it is a story centred around a few exceptional charters fighting against a huge and powerful enemy. Same for the Starwars single player games. Likewise for games like the Jedi Knight, or even Dark Force Rising.
In a MMO we cannot all be that one exceptional character, and if we all got the powers of Anakin know one would be special anyway and that would be the norm.

If Any truly persistent contend has to come from the player base, but we was never given the proper tool to create any. And that will never change, simply because there are less money in it shorterm.

My advice for anyone finding the game lagging in proper contend: If you wand to be part of a great story then join a guild of like minded individuals, and do you part to add to it as well.
