I have been experimenting with various ways of loading out my X-wing and I have a few questions.
I am currently a 3-4-4-4 Rebel and have been playing in space a lot.
I use a lot of level 5 and six engines, reactors, and capacitors going for minimum mass and then use droid programs on them to bump up the reactor energy to over 15k, Capacitor Overcharge, and Engine overcharge every time I fly. I figure that I am wearing this stuff down with the programs so I don't use great stuff. With these set I have about 950 speed and 1600 cap energy. I use pretty good weapons, with 2 Lvl 7 blasters(heavy) that do 2000-3000 damage a piece and an ion cannon that does about 1500 max. I do not run missles as I have found them pretty worthless for PvE and I don't think I'm ready for PVP yet.
The problem is with shields and armor. The great high level armor and shields have a ton of mass and the X-wing can't handle a bunch of that good stuff. I have good equip in my inventory and I am thinking about upgrading to really good shields, but they are usually too heavy and I can't find enough Lvl 7 and 8 stuff to RE. Is cap to shield shunt a good option for boosting my shields? Is it a common tactic amoung master pilots to run totally off programs when in space?
If I don't use programs than my ship is pretty much worthless, so I'm wondering if what equip schemes the master's use in space. I have had a terrible time finding shipwrights on bloodfin to RE stuff so I have pretty much given up on it. But I imagine that the best strategy for the future is to get good RE equipment and use programs in conjunction.
Excuse these questions if they are obvious, I often play in a group with members of my guild and I'm thinking that since we have so many people playing together I am getting by missions that I probably shouldn't just because I have a lot of help. I have had missions in tier 4 when I got totally rocked by tier 4 aggressors and gunboats, so I think I need to make some changes if I ever want to get to a high level solo.
Thanks for any advice you have.

I have the same exact questions that GrasGrotto poses. If someone could go into some longer discussion about this it would help out a ton for newer pilots seeking equipment knowledge.

You can shave off a lot of mass by dropping down to a mark I or II crafted reactor, with RO3 you can get all you need with a low tier one. Capacitor you can get by on a RE tier 4, they have all the recharge and capacity you need with CO3 and CtSS3. Dont bother with armor for PvE, just toss on the best mark I you can find, as you should never let enemies get through your shields all the way anyway. Dont worry about decay from programs, only level 4 routines do permanent decay, level 3 and below will be fully repaired at the station. You need to run programs, no one past level 2 can fly without a loaded up droid/FC. The common set is WO3 RO3 EO3 CO3 CtSS3.I can fit a level 8 crafted shield on my X without much problem, they're the way to go unless you can find a looted shield with better recharge than crafteds.

Regarding your program strategy, use level3 programs, and repair your parts before you land. If you didn't get blown up, then your items won't take permanent decay. Decay is based on a 1/10 system, and the programs do less than 10pts of dmg, thus, full repair, no decay. However, if you land then launch and run programs again, the dmg adds up, becomes more than 10pts and the item will decay.
My key equipment strategy is to look at the stats before the level. I find the stats I need in the lowest level part I can, so as to shave mass. The reactors cited are a perfect example. Since you run an overload, you dont need a large reactor, so why not shave off 4-5k by using a <1k crafted.
REd guns, armor and shield are the next great places to shave mass. REd armor can be as effective as crafted armor 3 levels higher, with 1/2 or less mass, in some cases.
I understand your pain at not being able to find a good REing SW. RE'd parts are the best way to shave mass and achieve best results, and eventually all the best ships have almost all RE'd parts. My advice is to find a SW, and build a relationship, and tip well for RE work. Yes they are only dragging and dropping, but they paid a lot to get the skill that lets them RE level 8 parts, so pay them for it. Tip them at least half what you'd get for selling all the parts you hand to them to the chassis dealer, thats what I'd do if I didnt have a guild SW. Since every RE'd part is one less crafted part you'll be buying from them, you need to compensate them.

I agree programs help a lot, but I was solo in tier4 before I began extensive use if the "standard" droid programs. They're a great aid, but not a true necessity.

Please excuse the newbie questions here, but what programs do you use to boost reactor and engine output? same with the cap. I am a rebel 3-3-3-3 and my X-wing is a joke. I have most of the shield programs stuck in the R2 but I could really use the Reactor/Cap/Engine boosts. Thanks.

Look on the Bazaar, or talk to a Neutral pilot, and have them burn the programs onto blank chips for you. They are taught to Neutrals, and usable by anyone, after they get a chip and install it into their droid/computer.

mark 3 armor is a good option for the x-wing. i can make it with under 6k mass and almost 1k armor. i also REd a 1100 armor, 3k mass piece recently

Nice post. I need help too with my X wing... well, im master and i hadnt any problems except with the Corvette.
Rigth now i have a level 3 reactor, i planned to use a low mass (low level) reactor with Reactor Oevercharge, but i really dont know what are the negative effects of this command.
The mass problem with the X wing is a true problem, even when i have one with 101k. I have also an engine overcharge 2, but im afraid i could damage my components. My weapons are not bad at all, one over 3600 an other +2500. but are too heavy, +35k of mass.
So i plan get a low mass reactor, with an reactor overcharge. My capacitor is level 2 but thats not a problem since my weapons waste few energy per shot (less than 15 if i remmber), and my shield have 1700 rear and front, but has too mass. I use 2 level 2 armor (700 hitpoints) and also i dont have booster.
Oh and i havent any reversed engenieer component.
Any help would be appreciated
