I have read in a few threads about people wanting to be able to pilot other ship's other than the one they are trained for.
I was thinking why couldnt SOE let us train for any pilot tree and is we decide we want to go for another tree let us keep the current cert's. So lets say i can do freelance, rebel and imp, pilot tree and one of the 3 of the 9 that way as a freelnace can fly a x-wing or a tie advance or so on. Even a person that is netural on the ground that has a imp cert can textrue and paint his ship, but a imp flying a imp ship must keep it the same. That way there is flexablity in what you see people fly in space.
Now with the changes comeing i dont know how it would effect this type of change off hand.
what are your thoughts. I personly dont think i would be that big of a change because pilots do not have any skill points used to do each tree so i dont see how this would effect the game. Or be able to have all 3 trees trained at the same time.

I don't think it should or will happen with the upcoming GCW changes. The devs have made it pretty clear that they want you to pick a side. Any system that would theoretically let someone pop from Imperial to Rebel ships won't work.
Now, I dont mind rewarding a pilot for Mastery, above and beyond the xp bonus. I think if a pilot is going to a new squad of similar alignment, he might be allowed to keep a cert.
I know JtL is all about personal ship posession, but you have to at least pay lip service to the fact that in the case of each of these organizations we fly for, It's theoretically their ship. In special cases, a ship is reserved for the private use of an officer, but for the average Imperial that's not really "your" TIE, its the TIE you hopped into that day when the Controller cleared you on the flight line. When you look at it in this context, it doesn't really make sense for the Empire to allow an ex-ace to take a high value piece of military hardware with them.

Lore wise, I don't think the Imperials would let non-military personnel fly Imperial ships. I could see Privateer's flying Rebel ships (NPC's do it), Rebels flying Privateer ships (on their off time), and Imperials flying Privateer ships (again, on their off time). That way each profession could fly their faction's ships plus that of one other, but not all three. Give each faction a little bit more variety, but still keep them unique to a point. But then, how would certs work? When you get tier 2 Rebel, would you get Y-Wing and the tier 2 Privateer ship? Not sure how that would work. Anyway, I'm a Rebel, but I'd love be able to fly a Krayt.
But then I think you should have to fly a Rebel ship during Rebel missions, Imperial ships during Imperial missions, etc.

Ick! there has to be a reason to master a given profession. I'm all for finding a way to add appropriate tier 1-4 certs for expansion to other people in other groups, but leave the master box alone.

The way they would have to do the changes, so it would make sense with the GCW, is remove the Privateer tree all together. They could allow currenge master privateers to choose a side, and they'd automatically master that side. If you were somewhere along the way to master, it'd work the same way, and you'd be assigned a random squadron, then you'd go and do your missions (I understand this isn't a perfect solution). They would then add privateer certs all through the rebel and imperial pilot boxes. You could only fly the privateer ships when you are on leave (or maybe if you're covert? Not sure about this). Then you would have to be barred from participating in Factional PvP (Deep Space) in space, unless all you pilots feel it'd still be acceptable. Mainly the privateer ships would have to follow the same GCW guidelines as someone who is 'on leave' on the ground.
I personally prefer the system the way it is. Although I wouldn't mind the system above. I'm really indifferent on the matter. The only problem is we'd still be limited to 3 ship slots, unless they changed that, and that would vastly decrease the bonus of having privateer ships available to both rebel's and imperials.

Got to agree with you there. Although I personally believe that the ship limit will eventually increase to 5. The devs just don't have a good enough reason not to. Combine that with the fact that there are enough people asking for it, I think it'll happen.

I agree that a few new ships to fly would be a really nice addition. However, if you really want to experience flying a different faction's ships, you could, for example (if you are imperial), start by becoming a Rebel Ace.Then drop that and become a Freelance master pilot, then continue on to be an Imperial Ace pilot.
The suggestion of letting a freelance fly reb and imp ships while locking in the Imps and Rebs would be unfair to those factions, so unless you allow everyone to do that, you are going to have a lot of angry people. It would also be very confusing in PvP and not in the spirit of Star Wars.
I've flown all 3, and I have my favourites from each faction, but my ground faction choice ultimately made me pick what my final space faction would be.
It really does not take that long to do, and you get the added bonus of having mastered 3 times.
