You'll get a Light Duty TIE to start.

All the squadrons give you a ship to start off with, Z-95, Scyk, and Light Duty TIE. You generally want to get out of them ASAP (though the Rebel Y-Wing is no prize without high-level components).

No actually since they made the starter ships upgradeable they're not that bad. I'd still get out of them soon, but they're not as terrible as they were.

I'd prefer the Z-95 over and Ywing I think, you can still get decent level 2 and 3 equipment into a Z95. Perhaps change to the Y-Wing longprobe then on Tier 2. Or get a Heavy Z-95 you got no mass problems there but it is expensive.
Privateers will switch to the Dunelizard as soon as possible (get equipment first, then dunelizard and load it with level 3 stuff), will be enough till Tier 4 or even till master.
Imperials... well they're screwed on mass anyway, but with some mass-management you'll make do (Level 3 equipment you can fit into a TIE Fighter, Level 5 should fit into a TIE/In, after that you really have to be careful), unless you can afford a Heavy TIE on Tier 1 then, with 95k mass (expensive again like the Heavy Z95, nothing for newbs)

The locations of all the trainers are in the FAQ. Specifically, you should probably head to Kadaara, Naboo, and join Inquisition Squadron. It is the most forgiving to new pilots.

As I said, generally ... there are exceptions. My first time through Rebel on one charcter, I went to the Y-Wing, then BACK to the Z-95 because the darn thing was so sluggish. Second time (on another character), I had a lot of parts, so was able to get enough maneuverability on the Y-Wing once I felt the pinch of the Z-95's mass, plus I had been flying the Tier 4 Privateer ship, so was more familiar with that sort of handling.

I'm loving my Z95. Of course, it has slightly more mass than most (OK, lots more), but it's still a powerhouse, even at Tier 4. I just finished my first mission, so I'll probably be looking at upgrading to a Advanced X-wing tonight, but my Z95 has served me very well up to now.
