Once you start it, you have to finish it or fail. Good news is that if you team up with more pilots, any kill that another pilot gets counts toward your 30 kill total. I have even noticed that kills outside the range of the pilot with the mission count toward to total kills.
The vette mission, you can enter and leave kessel as much as you want until you engage the vette. You don't even have to shoot the vette, you just have to be in the area and grouped with someone who is shooting the vette.

I didn't trust that bit about mission credit for just being grouped, so while the group I was in set up to engage the Vette (from dead astern using missiles, one person), I went and strafed gun 5. Also, people waiting for the next Vette can't just sit still, so if there's a group up and you're on the first half, group with them. If you get your 30 before the Vette shows, you're already in the group (and will hear about the Vette showing up the instant it does in group chat). If you miss the Vette, you know exactly when to expect it back and can take a break.

Hey guys, I can confirm that in fact you do only have to be grouped (Unsure if you have to be in range) of the corvette in order to complete the master mission. A friend and I took it down together the night before, but last night we were in a group of 5 (3 Aces, 2Pilots) and as far as I could tell I was too busy working the gunboats to really do any damage to the corvette. Maybe a stray bolt here and there, but I don't think i actually did any damage.

30 in one trip.
You can however group with and bring some friends along. Spread out, and everyone go kill something. Their kills count towards your mission. Goes alot faster that way.

I don't have an answer on the range theory. I know I was approx 2k away the first time I got it as I had no guns, no shield and no armor and I did not want to risk being one shot killed by and NPC. I've not heard or read anything about the range you must be in to receive the master badge though.

Bad data, hombre, you do have to do damage to it.

No, it has been confirmed that damage does not have to be done. You only have to be in a group that damages the vette. Unless this was changed with Publish 18, it should still work. The very first time I got master, I lost my guns to a GB w/o ever hitting the vette and Mezzepa finished the mission and I got master pilot. I helped a guy get master pilot and he lost his guns while fighting with an aggressor before we started on the vette. I solo'd the rest of the mission and he received the mission completed successfully spam. However, I believe the only way to get the 40k+ experience is to damage the vette. But you don't need to shoot it to get the master badge.
