I just have qualified for my first tier as a Rebel Pilot, and I was wondering what would be better to get -- The Y-Wing or the 2/3 Equipment thing...I was figuring Y-Wing...but...?

IMO always go for the equipment box first then the chassis. Your current chassis will be good for quite some time before you need the mass for the better equipment. Hell I'm still using a Dunelizard for Tier 4 (it's a tier 1 chassis).

unless you have good equipment, the Ywing will drive you crazy. go for the equipment and trick out your Z95

Take the equipment box first for tier 2 and 3 as well. The first thing you really need to do at each tier is upgrade your weapons and shields. Cert level 5 shields and weaponswill make the rest of tier 2 a breeze and cert level 7 shields and weapons are practically a requirement for tier 3.
I wouldn't be in a rush to get an X-Wing at tier3 like so many rebel pilots are. The longprobe works quite well if you put a decent YPR engine into it. Heavy shields and weapons will serve you much better at tier 3 than an X-Wing withcert level5 equipment in it.
My current load out in my Y-Wing longprobe is too heavy to fit into an X-Wing anyway. I am at 110K mass right now, so I plan on using my Y-Wing through tier 3. The first two mission in tier three were pretty easy, thoughthe second one went on forever.
In JTL, equipment is everything.
