As any SW will tell you, cornering the market on consumables can net you a pretty penny.
My apologies if this has already been postulated:
So here's my idea to make it part of the SW business to increase the longevity of loot pieces, thereby giving them a way to profit off of all the pilots like me, with almost completely loot-equipped ships.
As surmised in the thread title, I believe SWs should be able to make attachable armor for components to increase their longevity in a fight against the AIed gunboats the Devs seem to love adding to missions. Situate them like powerups - in stacks of 3-5 for selling purposes.
Tie the armor pieces to Iron/Petro asteroid ore (since it'd make sense - iron for armor, chem for formulation), and create different "Mark" levels:
Mk1 - 200 points/~2500 mass (nice enough for an L1-L4 reactor or low-level engine)
Mk2 - 400 points/~4500 mass (nice enough for an L6-L8 engine)
Mk3 - 800 points/~8500 mass (heavy fighter equipment)
Mk4 - 1600 points/~17000 mass (good for POB components to increase their viability in PvP and high-grade PvE)
Note this idea would only increase the ARMOR of a component - not the hp - once the plating was gone, the person would be just as dead.
The only downside to this would be that you'd have to in essence give every piece of equipment in the game a "slot" of sorts....and I'd fear that the Devs would decide to view such an opportunity as a way to "correct" loot to make everyone the same or put everyone on the same page.

Er..we have disposable armour.....it's called the Front Armour and the Back armour...
No one seems to want to use them for some reason...(wedging in that uber gun prolly). I myself treat ship armour as disposable and swap them out every 5 times I get them all shot up.
Mind you the power up idea is a good but I'd rather spread it out to the other professions though...
For the armoursmiths
armour protective coatings
-shiney coat to deflect blaster fire(reduce blaster damage)
-laminar "kevlar" coat to dispurse disruptor fire (reduce disruptor damage)
-sheild modulator to reduce ion damage....
For the weapons smiths
Well just like they have power ups for weapons
For artisans
-explosive upgrades for the missiles
-range up grades for the missiles
-increase ammo capacity
For DE's
-faster droid commands execution for specific comamnds (not all)
-faster targeting times for missiles etc
