The random chunks of asteroid you get some times while mining can be used to craft SW items and maybe some others ( i had 2 that said they may be usefull to chefs?? ) i know the new texture kits for youre ship need them.

Answer is, Each chunk, along with other small amounts 50-150 Units of Asteroid are used in making the special specific texture kits that were introduced in RoTW.
