Steps to switch squadrons:
1) Master current squadron (you definately want the bonus)
2a) If switching factions, goto (2b), otherwise, goto (2c)
2b) Strip out the components in all of your ships. Redeed all ships. Goto (3)
2c) Strip out the components in all of your ships except for your Heavy (You do have a heavy don't you?).
2d) Load up your Heavy with some of your better gear. Redeed all others. Goto (3)
3) Find and visit your factional recruiter:
Rebel: Recruiter Location: J'pai Brek (-5072, -2343) Tyrena, Corellia
Imperial: Recruiter Location: Commander Landau (-5516, 4403) Theed, Naboo
Recruiter Location: Commander Zhanks (-3406, 3101) Kor Vella, Corellia
Recruiter Location: Commander Gunham (-1124, -3622) Bestine, Tatooine
Freelancer: Recruiter Location: Gil Burtin (-1174, -3647) Bestine, Tatooine
4) Tell them you wish to resign....again and again....until they finally let you resign
5) Resign from your ground faction if needed
6) Sign up with your new squadron
7) Start the grind again

If you're in a factional squadron and are going to drop that faction, you don't need to resign your squadron, it drops when your ground faction does. Also, the redeeding isn't strictly required.

First of all, you drop all skills correct, even novice? And then, what about the ships on your data pad can you just leave them there and await you getting the skills again without losing the ships/equipment?
