Thread: Best way to run space pvp tourney?

I'm going to be organizing a space pvp tournament on my server but need input on the best way to set up and conduct one. I'm thinking of doing single elimination and having separate categories for each pilot faction and then a playoff among the best of those for best overall. Any advice or other ideas on how the actual pvp contests should be conducted would be greatly appreciated.

We're in the midst of running one of these now on Lowca. I think we came up with a pretty good way to manage it - you can read all about it here.

Are you sure you want to do a tournament? We started out with 1v1 and then 2v2 and 3v3 organized fights, but then we decided big, open battles were much more fun.

On Bloodfin we doa sort of King of the waypoint. At a certain time every week, Imps and Rebels alike try to hold the waypoint (which we pass around through e-mail to the new comers) in deepspace. If you die, you rerun your programs and come back for another attack. Rebels can regroup at the Station and Imperials at the SD, since the goal is to hold the waypoint they won't get load ganked.

That thread on Lowca is the kind of information I'm looking for. I've pretty much decided though to separate categories according to rebel, imp, and privateer so that there are champions for each group and according to which ships each faction can fly. It sort of evens the playing field. Then there will be an open tourney for best overall pvp pilot.

I like that idea too.

We run group-battle events in addition to our tournaments. We decided to switch to the tournament for a week because we were coming off a cycle of three squad-based and events and it was time for a change.

I find it's good for the community to shake people out of their factional mindsets for a while. It's fun when you all get out there as peers, rather than enemies.

After the 1v1 tournaments are completed we're reverting to another cycle-of-three squad based events. For those interested, the first one is here. There's plenty of time to throw together a toon and get involved.

I've actually thought about trying to hold a tournament on Bloodfin also. But my thinking is it has to be seperated... Imperial tourney, Rebel tourney, and Freelance tourney. You have say a Tie Interceptor tournament, or Tie Bomber tournament on the Imperial side, and an Xwing for the Rebel side... maybe dunelizard for Freelance. You basically have a specific ship tournament for each faction. That way it is somewhat standardized but the loadouts are all dependent on the person. So person A could try to fit in a lvl 2 engine while person B tries to fit in a lvl 4 engine... and so on.

Tie/IN's and Light Duty Ties would be great to use, but I don't know that there is a visible difference between those and a Heavy Tie. Same with the Z95. It would be great if we could use those low mass ships for the tournaments. But someone could show up in a Heavy and we'd have no way of knowing.

I may try to get one of these set up on Bloodfin in a couple months. Now that I have weekends free again for the most part I can really sit down and work this. If you want to chat, let me know. We can throw ideas around to try and make it better.

One more question along these lines. How do you begin each contest? Does each pilot start out at a preset wp that is however far apart?

Have a rally point for either side. For instance, in Deepspace, Rebels rally at station and Imps at the SD. Or for a tournament you could have one group at one hyperpoint and another at a different hyper point.

Then have the dueling person from each side fly to a waypoint that you've setin the middle. This way, both people just fly towards the waypoint and start fighting as soon as they see each other.
