Thread: Novice Freelance Pilot Mission What am I Doing Wrong?

I am attempting the third mission out of Mos Eisley for Davos the Privateer trainer as a Novice Pilot(0000) . I have to go visit 3 waypoints, then defend a transport. I fail every single time (8+ attempts so far), I think because I don't understand a few things.

1). First, is there a way to keep tabs on the Freighter I am escorting? "K" is supposed to target nearest friendly but doesn't. The only way I can keep tabs on it is to point myself at it and hit "x" to target it, and keep it targeted while fighting because otherwise I loose the d***ed thing and it gets destroyed. Mind you, that happens anyways, but my point is I can't find it otherwise. This of course means I can't monitor the ship I am trying to shoot at.

2). How the hell do I shoot down a ship? We are talking mostly Tier 1 Blacksuns and some Z-95. I guestimate it takes about 50 hits to kill one. There is simply no way I can destroy ships fast enough to prevent them from dropping the freighter. With it taking upwards of 5 minutes to destroy a ship, the remaining ships can easily destroy the freighter.

3). I am using the basic beginner ship with one laser that dropped loaded instead. It does slightly better damage than the prototype one but not by much. Some ships I can't seem to damage at all, period. I can hit them 100 times and they are still at 100%. I have generally been opting to destroy their reactor by selecting the "]" key (that is when I don't have to have the frieghter targeted to keep track of it).

I just don't get it. I did the same type ofmission as an Imperial before I switched factions and got it first time - and it was incredibly easy to destroy the attacking ships. Is the TIE that much better than the Scyk? If so I may well quit Privateer as a lost effing cause and go back to Imperial instead. I just want to be able to fly a YT-1300 eventually.

So far my only conclusion is that I am not supposed to finish the mission until after I have done another 500 combat missions and gathered enough drops to make even the crappy begginner ship a viable option. So far out of all the missions I have done, I have gotten about 8 dropped items, and only been able to use one of them.

Also, how do I start mining? I can *make* better components (I respecced to Master Shipwright, having been a Master Droid Engineer in the past, since Sony still hasn't created any reason to want a droid other than the BH ones) if I can get the mining ore but it seems like I can't get a ship that lets me use a mining laser until I get past this mandatory mission. Sigh.

Any help appreciated. I am on the verge of just giving up on being a pilot at all I am so frustrated.

RotW brought in a lot of new pilots, people picking up pilot again and lots of asteroid chunks. The problems you're having are lag related. The amount of lag varies per sector, with kashyyyk usually being the worst. Only suggestion I can offer is to do tier 1 during off hours and hope tier 2 takes place in a less laggy sector.

The freighter will have an orange-yellow box around it on the radar and appears white.

aim for the green LCS (lead computing sight) not the ship itself because your shots (despite being energy weapons) have a speed significantly less than that of light, that is they are actually projectile not beam weapons. However there is a known issue where client and server end up out of sync so you can appear to hit the ship but do no damage.

See above and you dont need to target the subcomponents unless you actually want to disable the ship (in order to dock with it - later missions will require you to do this) also it takes much longer to simply destroy a ship this way. The only fighters you want to target subcomponents on outside of disabling for missions are tie aggressors to take out gun 1 before finishing them off (tho its debatable if even this is worth it sometimes).

the newbie tie and scyck are roughly the same performance

make a scyck, these generally have more mass and hitpoints and can therefore hold better equipment (take equipment when you get the chance) you could also get a shipwright to make you better level 1 equipment than you have now.

Also, how do I start mining? I can *make* better components (I respecced to Master Shipwright, having been a Master Droid Engineer in the past, since Sony still hasn't created any reason to want a droid other than the BH ones) if I can get the mining ore but it seems like I can't get a ship that lets me use a mining laser until I get past this mandatory mission. well you can either do the missions on kashyyyk to get free (but not very good) mining equipment (you need ROTW regardless to mine) or you can make the equipment (much better) but this isnt going to be cheap, the price of space resource is quite high. Having said that youre not going to have much fun mining in a scyck, wait till you can get a dune lizard at least. The dune lizard saw me right through to pilot 4444 (solo) when I had to use a rik to take out the corsec gunship in my exit mission (just for better tanking and firepower)

Any help appreciated. I am on the verge of just giving up on being a pilot at all I am so frustrated.

I know ive stated the obvious in some of these things but I dont know what else to suggest other than take a friend with you, it should not be taking you 50hits to kill tier 1 ships even in the prototype scyck with the default weapons.

I didn't have the exact same mission, but I had a similar one doing missions for Corsec as a Freelancer--and at the time, my lag was so bad I had the same problem killing anything.

Just as an aside, I noticed that in the earlier missions as a Freelancer, the transport I was supposed to protect wasn't usually high-lighted on my radar screen. In fact, when I saw the high-lighted transport for the first time, I thought it was an enhancement to the game. So I wouldn't be surprised if your transport wasn't actually high-lighted.

These are some tricks that worked for me, when I was doing those missions:

1) Keep a close eye on the transport. When a bad guy shoots the transport, shoot the bad guy once or twice to change his focus. Instead of trying to destroy him, keep your eye open for the next ship to attack the transport. Attacking them seems to send them into an evasive maneuver mode, and for a little while they're avoiding you instead of attacking the transport.

2) If this doesn't work--or you get to a point in the mission where you really need to get rid of some bad guys--shoot a bad guy, fly away to a distance of about 800, turn and fly at him. He'll turn and fly at you. Reduce your speed to keep him in your sights for as long as possible, and get off as many shots as you can before he veers away. Fly away again until he's about 800 away, etc. When I was really badly lagged and couldn't kill bad guys any other way, I was able to kill them this way.

3) I've had really good luck disabling bad guys as opposed to destroying them, particularly when my guns weren't very strong. It's my experience that you can disable them more quickly than destroying them, allowing you to move to the next one. Also, while disabled ships will eventually explode, keeping them alive as long as possible can slow the coming of the next wave (since the design of some missions seems to send in the next wave when the current wave drops to a certain number of ships).

Hope something here helps.
