/Examine is your friend.
There is a point on all asteroids where they get too low on hitpoints. They won't produce any more chunks until you completely destroy them and a new one spawns in.
Just /examine the asteroid to make sure you are doing damage, then blow it up. A new one spawns in within a matter of seconds and you can go back to mining.
One of my pet peeves is all these people that leave asteroids empty, simply cause they think it's bugged.

Hmm,,, OK,, I've been mining almost since the Y-8 quest was published,,, I have mined around 400k asteroid resources.
If an asteroid was empty it would simply stop producing chunks.
What the original post was talking about is that the chunks become indestructable, this has been happening to me and has caused me to decide not to waste my time mining, since with this little bug, mining has become unprofitable,,, taking too much time.
Are the original poster and I simply impatient? Does an empty asteroid product indestructable chunks instead of nothing? Or is there something fubarred since the last couple publish/hotfix?

This bug is if an asteroid chunk hits 8000 or -8000 on any of it's co-ordinates, it's been around since mining started.
Sometimes you can hit it just at an angle to get it, or tractor it in just the right angle to pull it off the border.
Personally I leave it and go back to the main asteroid.

I think this is when you are close to the edge of the limit of your engines and you get that message come up. All I do is move round the other side the asteroid and it solves it
