My experience has been all the missions are soloable with patience, observation, accuracy, good equipment, the right droid programsand some creative flying.
I have some tips on how to do the different mission types, learning how to fly well is strictly a personal experience. All I can say about the topic is never fly in a strait line.
-Standard destroy the enemy: Never fly in a strait line. If something is hitting your rear shield, target the last enemy that hit you then turn to attack it. Don't continue to attack your current target, your current target is forcing you into a strait line which is a no no.
-Escort Missions: Don't go for the kill. Target one of the enemys components useing [ or ] and disable the foe. Doing this lets you get to the next enemy faster. If you can try to hit 2-3 of the enemy attacking what you are escorting so they attack you instead of the escortee.
-Defend a Way Point: Be quick be nimble. At some point you will have to stay at a way point while you make or recieve a transmission that takes several minutes while defending against waves of ships. This is where the game teaches you about the benifits of having a high Yaw, Pitch, Roll (YPR) rate + a decent amount of forward speed. Do not attack the waves of enemy ships. Swoop in, out and around your way point. At most you are faceing 2 waves of ships for the durration of trip. Kill even 1 ship and another wave will spawn.
-Pick up and delivery: Fast as fast can be, you will never catch me. You want to be able to fly at a speed of 800-900+ for these, depending on what tier you are on, if you havent been useing engine overload and Capacitor to Shield Shunt by now, then you better get your act together you will need it and a clean pair of underwear. As soon as you get the drop off waypoint run to it. Waves of ships will spawn to attack you, ignore them. Waggle back and forth up and down if they are too close to you. As soon as you see the drop off ship dock with it. Use the shield shunt wisely while you are docked and start a hyper to any sector within the same solar system. If you want to try to fight the waves if ships you left in the dust but are rapidly approaching your position, ignore the last bit of advice and good luck.

if you find you're getting overwhelmed instead of destroying the ships just disable them. it's faster to do and slows down the respawns. also like a previous poster said get the cap overload and cap to shield shunt programs. as a 1111 pilot use the level 2 of each program.
note: you won't get any exp for disabled ships that self destruct, but finishing a tough mission is more important than getting a little and then dying and having to start over.

You only need to disable one per wave, but if you're not sure which wave it's from, disable it anyway and play it safe. Note that once you start disabling ships, closest enemy may pick up a disabled ship, so watch for that and try targetting moving ships.

After being bored to tears on the ground game I decided to try JTL. So far I like it but it is very diff. than the ground game.
So, on to my questions,
I am a freelancer and have a Scyk ship. I have looted a bunch of stuff and tried them in my ship to see what works better. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what looted item works well or not?
I have all my xp boxes filled on the 1st tier so I am down to just missions. The one I am now is a escort mission and I am getting mobbed by black suns. There are several waves of them and defending the cargo ship seems impossible without help.
Is this soloable? Or can I buy or make my current ship give more damage so I can kill them quicker. I never get killed just they blow up the cargo ship.
Thanks for your replies.

If you can use a flight computer at your current level, i would suggest getting an engine overload chip and a weapon overload..move faster and hit harder, but if not..usually switching parts around worked for me, only needed help on a tier3 mission.

Also get reactor overload, capacitor overload and cap to shield shunt programs. Chances are your droid/flight computer will only hold a few programs, so you might want to get the level 2 versions of all of them...if the droid/flight comp has enough room to store them all that is.
As for parts, crafted stuff is pretty much better than looted, with the exception of reactors at the lower levels. You can find reactors in the 10k to 13k range for energy generation that are level 1. Once you get to around level 4 certifications and up, some crafted stuff is better...but re-engineered (REd) looted parts will start to dominate. At level 1-3, crafted stuff wins hands down...as you just can't get enough of a RE bonus on low level parts. Level six and up is where REd loot starts to make a noticable difference.
Ask some ace pilots on your server for a quality SW that only uses HQ resources. You will pay more, but the stuff is worth it. Then, as you get higher, start collecting loot to RE later.
