Thread: Space Mining Change Proposal

Well how many of you out there do not like the fact you have such a small cargo hold on your ships. You mine and fill it up and then need to land to unload it. What a "time sink" and something that is just not fun. Here is a change I might suggest for the Devs to consider.

Base the size of the cargo hold, on all ships, on the amount of mass left over (unused) for that ship.

Example:

total ship mass of a ship = 191k

Total equipment installedonship = 163k

Remainder of mass unused = 28k

28,000would be the size of the cargo hold on that ship. When mining an asteroid each unit of resource would equal 1 point of mass.

So its all in the control of the player on how they equip their ship which determines the cargo hold. Why should a ship with a lot of mass space available be limited to a cargo hold of 1700 or so. This means a player can spend more time in space mining and fighting spawns then landing to unload and launching in space. It also means you can collect different types of resources and have them stored in the cargo hold because you actually have room to make it worth the amount collected.

Just a thought....

sorry to say this, but bad idea

Think about imps.. our ships are lowmass, and we will have it perhaps even worse than it is now

But for rebels and privateers it is a good idea

If I changed the 6cylinder in the family car to a 4 cylinder, or took the 4wd out of the truck and made it 2wd, would I suddenly have a bigger trunk and more legroom?

Our spaceframes are modular, and to a certain extent, using smaller parts would allow for more free space, but a direct 1:1 conversion? nahh should never happen.

Compromise- more crafting options in the building of Cargo holds that would allow for them to scale larger. Taking up more free mass, but also holding more.

Good points on the replies. I actually don't care what is changed. I just want to be able to carry more mined resources. My current hold is 1748 and I just hate mining due to the time wasted landing to unload.

I could use my Y-8 (if they ever get the thing to work correctly) but solo is a lot more fun in my Rhykk, Krayt or Adv X-wing.

I for one have no problems with space mining for non-Y-8 POB ships and starfighters. Their hold sizes make sense. (That really doesn't say too much as SOE is always changing around stuff that seems to "make sense.") I do have a problem with mining in a Y-8 and I think the following should be changed (not necessarily in the most important order):

  • Be able to solo mine in a Y-8 whether you are at the helm or a turrent. (I've tried many times and cannot do this. Asteroid does not loose HAM from my blasts.). Would be nice to remain moving when you leave the pilot's chair.

  • Fix the rendering bug in the cockpit of POB ships or at least get it to the point where it doesn't bork my camera on the ground.Seems to be fixed.

  • Give the following bonuses to harvesting:

    • 2x - Using a Y-8 ship

    • 2x - Using a Y-8 mining laser to break off a chunk

    • Normal tractor beam bonus (2x)

This would actually make the Y-8 a mining ship and somewhat compensate for the fact the thing is a slug in space.

  • Get rid of asteroid HAM. Seems like the Y-8 can decimate an asteroid after a few chunks break off. IMHO a waste of CPU cycles on both the server and client, especially since the asteroid spawns in essentially the same spot.

  • Allow the Y-8 to "double loot" an asteriod chunk if it were to be a special chunk by also allowing it 1/2 the resources. The system message could be changed to reflect this like: "After removing " . var_ast_harv >> 1 . " units of resources, you have uncovered " . var_str_ast_chunk_desc . " asteroid chunk."

  • Inceased chance to get a special chunk (Pls no overkill like SL:Blaze of Glory.)

  • Seems the Y-8 attracts space pirates a lot more frequently then starfighters and other POB's. Seems odd since it is the weakest of all ships and at this time has no mining bonuses.Seems to be fixed.

  • Possibly allow starfighters and perhaps POB ships to dock with the Y-8 transfering the contents of the cargo hold.

  • Default turrent position of the front turrents are straight ahead not pointing to bottom of ship, Range of motion should be +/- 90 degrees Right/Left & Up/Down (half a sphere)

  • OMG insane idea just popped into my head which could actually work. Tractor beam siphons x resources off a large asteriod chunk. Thereby decreasing its structural integrity and breaking up into smaller asteriods which then can be tractored to the ship. (only works in Y-8) Large chunks must still be broken off with mining laser.

  • Whoever sits in the Ops chair can seethe cockpit. The option to display/hide the cockpit should not influence this. Would be nice if there were buttons to push to activate/deactivate ship abilities. (Y-8 my 1st POB, not sure if this exists or not in others.)
