Ok, first off I want to apologize for this mundane question, as I am sure you all have heard it numerous times. Is there a way to mine without the y-8 mining ship? Please feel free to make fun of me, as I know this is a dumb question for all you space jockeys. :-) I do apologize, but your help would be great appreciated.

I just selected Imperial Navy, dont know if that makes a difference or not.
