Ok I've been an ace on both my characters for quite a while now, I've taken out my fair share of corvettes and ISD's solo for my own gain or my guilds and have even been sucessful in a few PVP encounters (the odd chance pvp oppertunity pops up on my server).

But one thing that STILL gives me a little bit of hassle is gunboats, now I'm not talking about those floating boxes of xp in kessel or even those spinning but still managagble boxes of XP in the same space zone.

I'm talking about the one's where the AI is actually working and they will adjust speed, course, heading etc. and chase you down with the intent to kill you.

Anyone got any good tips? Should it just be a case of joust, strafe, boost, shunt, repeat? or is there any other tactics I dont know about.

Also, how come I can take out a subsystem on the vette with just one mark IV proton yet a gunboat just goes "huh?, did you just feel a tiny little scratch there pilot?" (Obviously that doesnt count when you see them launch chaff)

Any thoughts?

There is a LOT written on this subject. I highly advise you search for some of the older threads, although it sounds like you already know the basics.

And before you flame me, yes search works, you just have to be patient/try resubmitting and hitting refresh a few times. You'll find a lot more info than you'll get in one limited thread.

set your shields to extreme front and joust them. i.e. fly right at them with guns blazing and boost away like hell. Cap to shield shunt to heal your shields, and then turn and fly straight at them again. Rince and repeat.
