I was wondering...are there other TIE fighter/bomber/interceptor pilots out there who don't use shields? I am a big fan of those old starfighter flight sims like X-Wing, and I always thought that the no-shields issue was a special challenge. I am taking up this challenge now, and it's really fun, at least in my opinion.

Anyway, for those of you who love your shields, I challenge you to go flying without them. I feel that it adds a sense of urgency and mortality to the game. Right now I feel that most of the missions are quite easy, and going shield-less can help you appreciate the courage (or stupidity) of Imperial pilots.

In PvP I'd probably drop the shields on my ship as they aren't going to help me live any longer. Against AI though shields are a necessity. You fly around in deep space and get jumped by 12 enemies a few are going to land hits, no shields means you die real fast.

Good Luck making a pass at the vette without any shields. The current mechanics kind of make it impossible to fly without shields. In fact many pilots I know don't even put armor on because it just takes up mass and doesn't offer all that much protection.

Back when I played a lot of TIE Fighter and XWvT, my friends and I had a saying: "Friends don't let friends fly unshielded craft." As far as I'm concerned, that still applies to JTL. I fly my TIE Advanced without any armor, but there's no way I'd fly without shields. Tier 4 B-Wings with missiles pack way too much of a punch to even think about such insanity.

It'd be nice if armor didnt suck so much/get chewed up and decay so fast =)

And here I am thinking I'm the only one that didn't use armor. IMO, if you can get more shields by not using armor, and have the energy, DO IT!

Pros:

Shields Recharge

Shields usually weigh less

Shields Recharge

Armor Doesn't Recharge

Shields Recharge

If your armor is taking damage, you need better shields LOL.

Cons:

If your shields fail, its probably all over.

What I do is tweak my ship without armor as much as possible, and then, see whatI got left over for armor. If I can put in that 100 point armor ont he rear as opposed to none, I will. But I usually put everything else as a priority.

Going without Shields? Not with any of my good components. You'd need HEAVY shielding.

Just remember, the pilots seen in the movies in TIE's didn't have shields. They also didn't last very long. Now, do YOU want to be one of those pilots? I know I sure don't.

The guy was just suggesting something for canon's sake, RP value, pride. You know all those things most people never pay any attention to in game.

I'm quite sure he knows that shields are much better than armor, lets not have a debate when everyone is on the same side of the issue.

I think you'd probably die even with shields.

1 vs. 12 is an uneven match up
