Thread: Which weapon configuration do you use?

I have some questions about which weapon configuration would be most effective. I'm using 2 weapons on my X-Wing (never have enough mass and/or energy for a third). Which would be more effective: ion cannon and disruptor (one for armour, for for shields), or 2 blasters (both being equally good against shields and armour)? Also, if I'm using ion cannon/disruptor, should I re-map the fire button and fire my ion's until the shields have dropped, then switch to disruptors to finish them off? I would assume if I'm using two blasters I'd leave it where the ship alternates between weapon 1 and 2. An additional question would be, can you change the ship so it only fires weapon 1 or weapon 2, and have a button to switch between them?

So which configuration do you use, and which do you believe to be the most effective against the tier 4 ships I'm going up against right now?

I personally stuck with the Blasters for my X-wing, which is the best idea for a multi-role craft in my opinion. It also looks so much better when you have two guns firing at the same time on the X-wing craft

I think the main area where you need Disrutors and Ion Cannons is when you come up against bigger ships, such as the corvette, where having one or two of these would be quite useful if you are going in as a group, so one wave attacks the shields then another wave attacks against the armour.

Do the math:

heres what you do.

Take your shield rating on both your disruptor and ion, and multipy that by your max or min damage on each respective gun. Then add the two result together.

Do the same for the armor rating.

Now, take your sheild/armor rating on your blasters (typicaly 0.42 or so) and multiply that by your max or min damage. Add the two damage numbers together.

Compare the results between both sets of weapons vs shield and armor.

I think in most cases, the ion/dis combo does a slight amount of damage more, or is acutally on par with two blasters. really depends on the weapons themselves though.

actually, with SW-crafted components made with identical resources, you'll get exactly the same total DPS with 2 blasters or an ion/disruptor combo - for every point of shield eff you get with ions you lose the same amount in armor eff, and vice versa for disruptors, so the average damage is still the same. You shouldnt really have a need to alternate fire between ions and disruptors unless you have a really crappy capacitor that cant support two weapons firing at once - and i cant imagine even a tier 1 looted capacitor with CtSS 3 running not being able to do that. Just go with two blasters linked fire and try not to miss

The only application I've ever had for disruptors - and it was very very useful - was when missions required me to take out heavy support ships like a tier 4 decimator and TIE aggressors for my 4444 exit mission. I'd use concussion missilesto quickly take downthe shields, then a disruptor to eat through the components - with a 2500 max .85 eff vs armor disruptor, they went down very fast. But of course this strategy would only work when you have one big target you're focusing on, since you'd run out of concussions very fast if you were trying to do this on duty missions vs fighters =)

The only time having Ion/Disruptor support is if you can manage 3 guns, but don't have a Cap good enough to fire 3 guns all the time. Ion/Blaster/Disruptor and switching from Ion/Blaster to Disruptor/Blaster.

Beside the point, you should be able to fit 3 guns by following some of the following directions. Make sure you're using REd or crafted parts. Saving a tiny bit of mass on every system from the RE leaves enough room for a gun most times. Getting ahold of a Reactor Overload Chip from a Neutral ends any Power concerns.

Yup, pretty much. I experimented with both configurations for awhile myself. I only mentioned how to do the math on it so other people can find out for themselves.

Honestly i prefer two blasters. Ion's are too flashy and hurt my eyes after awhile and disruptors are noisy and annoying after awhile.

with lvl 1-3 looted/crafted reactors and capacitators you can easily stick 3 weapons in your x-wing once you are an ace or x/x/x/4 and have both reactor overload 4 and capaciator overload 4, of course you will always want engine overload 3 and weapon overload 3 to go with it. until you are high enough to get those droid commands i suggest using the longprobe for soloing for xp.

Well, for me I tried the Ion/Disrupter combo with equal damage for awhile and then I tried two blasters for awhile in my Dunelizard. What I found was that when using just the blasters I was able to destroy targets faster than when I used my ion/disrupter combo. I figured it was because I didn't always hit the target everytime I fired, so if my disrupter happened to be the blaster that was hitting a target with shields still up it was not as good as if it would have been a blasterthat washitting it. But it really did not make that big of a difference. Maybe a couple of seconds per kill.

In my opinion running 2 Ions alone has been more effective than a ion/dis or ion/blaster... the ion cannon does the most damage to shields and components leaving only the armor that it has a slightly harder time dealing with, but that .50 or so (.25 x2 since your running 2 of them) or so to armor is still usually enough to take the armor out pretty fast thus ripping through the rest of the ship quite quickly.. if you are going to run a ion / disruptor combo then set your joystick to fire them independently and have your favorite shipwright put a shield intensifier into the ion and a armor intensifier into the disruptor.. firing them seperatly will give your capacitora huge break and give you the best of both worlds.. the downfall to that tactic though is remembering to switch to disruptors as soon as the shields are gone and then remembering to switch back to ions as soon as the armor is gone.. if you can successfully keep track of the switches you will blow through ships quite fast...

If the truth be told, lately my preference has been to use RE'd guns with .65 or more on both Shields/Armor. Unfortunately its not possible to find the true Ion or Disruptors that drop as lvl 1,2 (.80+ vs a given type) in the higherl levels of weapon. It's an incredibly efficient weapon when you RE a .8 Ion and a .8 disruptor together. The insane part of me dreams of an L10 cannon that is .9/.9

Currently my Xwing has two L6 RE'd blasters that are .67 or higher, and a third gun that is a crafted L7 blaster. I would use 3 RE'd L6's but the charge/shot is prohibitive even with Cap overcharge 3. Just tonight I finished the RE of my L8 reward gun, but to fit that in the third slot I think I would have to forsake armor....

my xwing has three guns, all reverse engineered. the first two are the siener systems "boltdriver" imperial reward gun (lvl7, about 3k damage), and the third is a incom-tricannon rebel reward gun (lvl8, 3600 damage). i kill tier4 ties in two shots.

How do you go about getting the reward guns I keep hearing about? I realize your's are RE'd to 3k dmg, but I'm sure they're not bad to start with.

they are quest rewards, when you finish your tier4 exit mission you get a reward gun (for imperials it might be the tier3 exit).

and those are pre-re damage figures i posted

the lvl8 comes out to 3876, the lvl7 like 3060 or do.
