Only in DeepSpace - you can pick a side if you are neutral on the ground - otherwise only as your ground faction.
Once you leave DeepSpace you will now aggro the opposing side from which you chose and not be able to attack your chosen side anywhere (NPCs) - PCs will no longer be able to attack you outside DeepSpace. You will have to redeed in order to reset yourself to neutral vs NPCs.
If you are factioned on the ground, you can go to a Faction station in space and go overt for your faction, but will then be unable to enter Kessel or DeepSpace until you redeed and go covert again.
It is IMPOSSIBLE for a Privateer to go overt in Kessel now.
That's not true. I'm Imperial but a Freelance Pilotand I go overt up at the Imperial Station around Endor. But I can't go to Kesselusing the deep spaceDath station, You have to go to the Imperial Deep Space Station. He lets you go to kessel, but not Deep Space. He says I don't have enough Pilot Prestige for Deep Space even though I have 5 mill.
But you can go to Kessel overt as a freelancer and Farm Tier 5 FP.
Not sure how Rebel Freelancers do it.
Sorry, I forgot to put the word Neutral in that last line - Neutral Privateers cannot go Overt anywhere but Deep Space, it is impossible for them to go overt in Kessel and/or anywhere else but Deep Space.

We'd do the same thing you do. Go overt at the space station in Dantooine then head off and farm FP in Kessel. I think I might do this tonight and tomorrow.
