I think regardless of what banner we fly under, most of us will agree that privateers have some awesome ship.

Dunelizard and Krayt gunship have to rank amongst my most favorite ships in the game. But with the GCW starting to kick off with this last patch, i question it now for one major reason.

Faction points. Which by posts that ive read as so far, the need of which has increased for pets and the like.

Yes, you can gain faction points inspace as a privateer, but your options are really limited. You can't pull teir 4 missions that spawn factioned craft, nor can you go overt in deep space (will they ever be able to?), and kessel spawns are often borked.

Personnaly i just remasted privateer a couple days ago, and although i dont like some of the imperial ships, im already thinking about going back to imperial pilot because of faction points. (my ground skills are teh suck, Master SW/artisian)

Thoughts?

I have an alt who is master privateer pilot and he is factionally alighned on the ground - when he goes into Deep Space he is overt as his ground faction (I'm not certain whether it defers to ground faction or faction bias of the privateer group to which you belong - RSF seems to be Imp friendly and Smuggler Alliance seems to be pushed to being Reb friendly). A few weeks back on Chimaera we had an imperial/rebel deep space PvP battle and quite a few on both sides were flying privateer ships.

Ya I had always done Kessel when a privateer. There has been the "privateer is not a factional profession VS privateer gaining faction points in space" going on for a while. I personally think with the new push towards taking a side that opening up ways to help privateers being able to have full access is a good idea and could help push even more players into the GCW. But thats just me

I like the conflict here. Well, I like most of it.

I like the fact that, in order to be of more use to your chosen side, you are considering joining your side's space navy. I think that is one of the easiest ground/space interactions to have is to allow at least one of them to provide benefit to the other. In this case, it is about going Navy to help yourself pick up Army perks.

What I don't like quite so much is that you admit you feel the Imperial Navy is, as a whole, a bit shorted on range of craft and usefulness of craft in combat. (Sorry, it's not that I think you're wrong, it's that I don't like when the system makes players feel it is unbalanced) I understand that part of this is personal preference in flying style, but it does seem to me (opinion -->)that Imperials have fewer viable starship options in high level combat.

There are going to be more and more reasons to want to participate in the GCW on the ground, as that has evidently become a primary concern of those planning for the future of the game. What I would like to see more of are plans to carry that emphasis into space, as I feel it is too common for factioned ground players to see no serious benefit to joining their respective navies instead of going freelance.

I guess I have no advice as to whether you should switch or not, but I am happy that the system has prodded you into re-evaluating your choice.

And there is the perfect counterpoint to making no changes....

^^ yea, that occured to me as well.

But since it was brought up, there are two points which i dislike about Imperial ships.

1.) Obsolecence. If you look at the other two professions, All ships retain uesfulness. Not so with Imperial ships. The Tie fighter, T/LN, and to a lesser extend the T/I are all "throw away" ships that retain little, if any usefulness. Which limits or overall ship selection.

2.) Comparisions. Mass doesnt bother me so much as weapon hardpoint selection. Why does the T/I for instance have only 1 gun mount?
But to further illustrate my point, has anyone REALLY compared to Tie Advanced to a Dunelizard? Having just resigned imperial ace about 4 days ago, i was very keen to take notes. But this much you can find here on this board:

TIE-Adv:
65k mass, 80K resources | cost to build at 2 CPU = 160K credits
[SP: 2 Guns] 1 missile
[Spdx 1.0 Acc 40 Dec 60 Pitch 300 Yaw 300 Roll 150]

Dunelizard:
85k mass, 15K resources | cost to build at 2 CPU = 30K credits
[SP: 2 Guns] 1 missile
[Spdx 0.95 Acc 30 Dec 30 Pitch 300 Yaw 300 Roll 150]

Privateers get at Teir 1, what Imperial pilot gets at tier 4, for a fraction of the cost, with more mass. Sure the dunelizard is *slighlty* slower, but not by much. The same engine in my dunelizard and in my T/A is only about a 100 -150 pt difference, furthermore a style 1 dunelizard isn't a very much larger target than a T/A is. The turn rate on both ships is IDENTICAL. Somethings wrong here folks.

NON CORRO POST:

A few things. 1, I do agree on the "Obsolecence" and the fact that the imperial ships tend to come at a higher cost. And 2,I must admit that I personnaly like the Imperial ships better then the other factions ships (flown them all) as "a whole". A dunelizard is still about twice the target of an A-wing and about 1.5 times the Advanced or Interceptor. I get hit about 75% less in TIEs when going after corvettes then I do in the other factions ships. The opressor is a great capitol ship killer and still a very viable PvP ship. The Krayt is a huge target and the B-wing is a real pain to turn at any decent speed.

So in my personal oppinion, yes the Imperials have the least ammount of viable choice, but I think they have the best selection to "fill" your datapad. Each profession have some down sided in certain areas like droid programs and space specials. But imho the imperial droid-commands/specials/master-ship-selection is one of the better packages out there right now but it can come at a higher cost.....

You know, I agree. I don't think I'm contradicting myself by saying that. My time as an Imperial may have been the mostenjoyable I had. I also attribute my experience with the Interceptor and Advanced for changing me from a Freelancer in a Rihk/Krayt to one flying a Duneliz almost exclusively.

Ties taking less hits... or rather, Ties being harder to hit....

Ya i forget bout that sometimes. Still though, i often question by how much of a percentage that hit difficulty is, and if its worth the trade off as in the dunelizard vs T/A scenario. Its very hard to get passed something like that.

Regardless, i misssed the Navy the same day i resigned it. I think im going to be going back to imperial pilot, inquisition, soon, but for reasons more than faction points.

- Emperor retreat access. (also great if say, all naboo ports are captured, you can shuttle people there to rally)

- Most imp pilot teir 4 trainers for duty missions are at uncapturable locations.

I would take an Advanced over a dune anyday of the week, both PvP and PvE, but thats a personal opinion. Many are very happy in a Kirahz or a Dune.

Though this is getting a little further off-topic all the time...

While a lot of Imperial vessels aren't viable towards master (e.g. T/F, T/ln, etc, etc), you *do* have a selection of vessels that allows you to fulfill all starfighter combat roles.

Heavy bomber:

Rebel: Longprobe/B-wing

Imperial: TIE Bomber/Oppressor

Space Superiority:

Rebel: X-wing

Imperial: TIE Interceptor

(I grouped these two together, as they really are a fair matchup...the Advanced has a bit too much firepower for its size to be considered a fair match for an X-wing, IMO.)

Interceptor:

Rebel: A-wing

Imperial: TIE Advanced

Crewed starfighter:

Rebel: Y-wing

Imperial: TIE Aggressor

So really, as I see it, the Imperials are fine for craft...and a good pilot can squeeze a light duty TIE all the way to Interceptor, or at least to TIE/ln, which will take the pilot to the Advanced. (I did it one way, one of my guildmates did it the other.)

But that's just my 2 creds.

Heh, i think i may have answered my own question.

"Is privateer worth it for factionally alligned players now?"

Hmmm, not really?

At any rate, i only mentioned imperial ships because someone else brought it up. Please note, my complaints were not about mass In terms of PvE, I do disagree about some of those matchups cited in the last post on this thread. I'd take an xwing over an T/I , or a Longprobe over a T/B any day of the week.

Never thought you were going in that direction fwiw. And I must admit, I am a better pilot after "squeezing" into TIEs. Gave me a whole new perspective on the A-Wing too. Many rebel pilots never really use the A until post master. The upside to the Imp-mass-squeeze is the fact that IMHO it can turn out better pilots...
