Well I just spent 20 mins on a nice post about how this ship could be improved but it was spat out by the forum coding so I am just going to summerize.

1. Instead of minerals being assigned a resource value, assign the value to a percentage of the ships hold. Eg. Starship with large cargo hold = 1500, y-8 with small hold =5000. Make it so that each time you shoot an asteroid down with mining lasers it gives 0.5% of your hold, if you use tractor beams make it 1% of your hold. So where the starship would get 15 units per tractor, the y-8 would get 50.

2. Create a new y-8 mining class tractor that can actually tractor beam and collect the large asteroid chunks that initially break off from the target asteroids. A vessel this size shouldnt be chasing little rocks around, and with its mass in combination with a large cargo hold. The large chunks should be collectable and equal the combined total of resource units that all of the small broken down asteroids are worth.

With option 1, the only real downside I see is that although I havent seen the large cargo hold (y-8 only), I am sure it is pretty huge and this could lead to overmining and deflating the value of the new high mass ships and parts. Option 2 would be my prefered one because it would save time and make the vessel 'THE' mining ship to use.
