For some, the journey to ace pilot is a long and hard one which they relish. For many, it is a long and hard journey which they loath. And for a very few gifted pilots, they are immediately Aces.

Each group, you see, will behave in certain ways. The first will not really see it as a grind- they are just having fun and getting a few wounds while they are at it. The second group will usually pay millions of credits to have other aces help them throughevery mission they get(the people in the second group tend to be very well established on the ground and absolutely irate that they have to start at the bottom of the ladder again). And the third will usually end up saying "what the heck? That fast?" And proceed to master the other eight squadrons.

I fell into the first group. I started out with no skill that would help me in this type of flight. I realized the second I started thrttling up on my Skyck and noticed the change in handling at different speeds that this was not aRogue Squadron game. I was not very well established on the ground at all- I was a struggling novice Ranger who had, in over two months of play, amassed about 50k in his bank account. I laughed at absurd armor prices- 70k for a whole suit?- and lived mainly off of donations from kind veterans. And then, I hti space.

It started out with the Heavy Hump, my Skyck. I called it that for a reason I do not know- maybe because it seemed so slow. Then there was the Sidewinder, the Dunelizard, named for obvious reasons. I started doing duty missions, and started to notice my financial situation improve as I sold loot. I did a mission for the Dantooine space station- 10k for a mission?!? Holy crap! my interest in space continued to grow.

And then there was the Stardust 1- my Kimogilla starfighter, my prized possession. I had, doing tier two duty missions, aquired enough XP to mvoe almost straight through tier three. I scoffed at the Ixyen fighter- lower mass than the Kimo? Hm, no thanks. I deeded it quickly.

And then there was the long, usually dreaded tier four grind. I, like many pilots, ground out at the spawn (you knwo what I mean). I lived on the edge there- shield shunt kep me alive. I would chase after fighters, trying to blast them away with my guns, and then, in would swoop a Rihk or a Decimator, and the thing would blow it two shots. Sure, I got XP. But my loot, my lifeblood, was cut off from me. I would try as hard as I could to get the loot, to score the kill, but every time a better pilot, a master pilto usually, would swoop in inside his uber starfighter and destroy a ship in just a few shots. And I wanted nothing mroe than to one day return to that spot, a Master Pilto and on equal turf, and show them up.

Teh grind ended eventually, and I started my master missions. I needed help on all of them. Like most first time Aces, I had an Imperial Ace blow the vette for me, using a combination of bomber strike and missiles. I leapt into the battle once, got hit by the vette, and lost all shielding and armor. Luckily I made it out alive, but I could not reenter the battle in my Rihk, and stood on the sidelines ashames. Even the gunboats had beat me.

I have since poured everything- my time, my finances, and my energy- into piloting. I have developed a Pirate Guild, thriving and continually growing with a current member cout of sixty. We even made a pirate city on Lok, which got it's shuttleport just a few days ago. Life was looking good- but it got better.

And i had my ships. My YT1300 I used all the time, at the spot, to help guildees level up. But it wasnt really me- I was just sitting in the lounge, usually reading or surfing while my gunners destroyed enemies. So I dove in for a new ship the M22-T Krayt Gunship.

It is an amazing ship, packing a real punch that I had always dreamed of. she had a huge profile and was not exactly as nimble as a JSF, but boy could she hit hard. Gunboats in Kessel started dropping liek flies as I laboriously began (and still am in the process of) perfecting my gunboat murdering skills, which I hope to soon use on the vette. And once I have done that, only then will I truly see myself as a qualified Ace.

The Havoc's Spawn was tried today at *the spot*. I had three guns on pilot control, all of them over 3.6k damage, all overloaded. I blasted everything out of site- loot started piling up. Then came a Kimogilla- much like the one i had flown. I didn't mind him- he insuperior to me. Let him have the XP... ALl I need is the loot... here comes a JSF. Bah- my firepower of the gunboat easily over powers him. I am just in range of the spawn- I fire as soon as they jump in system. Kill afetr kill, loot after loot...

And then I realized what I was thinking- I had indeed become the monster I used to hate so much. I was sitting at a well known grinding spot blasting the hell out of easy ships that presented me no challenge. And I was sure to get rich of of it. And I had tunred agressive- the JSF moved forward, so I moved in front of him. I had transformed into the terrible loot whores I used to dream of showing up.

But with this revalation, I realized the truth of those people i had dealt with during my grind. They had, at one point, been just like me, competing for loot and loosing. Of course, at the time I had not thought of it from that perspective. But it was, in essence, a viscous cycle, that for sure started from one single idiot who camped the place 24/7.

I have decided that, at least for when there are people already at teh spawn, I will not try to out loot them, I will just help people get XP. I decided to never, like the ace campers before me, tell a noob to piss off if he wanted XP. And whiel I can see myself going there every once in a while to boost my bank account, I think that my days of muscling XP hunting noobs out of loot they really COULD USE (and not just sell to the chassis dealer) are done.

But like I said, every once in a while. I am nearly an Ace afetr all (I still have the vette to destroy in the Havoc's Spawn). I think a few well earned comforts are in order- but not in excess.

I can honestly say I've never been on either side of that equation. I guess I just found less popular spawns for grinding. (And I did most of my grinding by helping guildies do their tier 3 missions, both through my tier 2 AND tier 4.)

I'm sure there is an easy explanation for this and I'm going to feel really stupid for asking, but how can you fly a Krayt if you are not an Ace yet? Has the cert been moved?

If you read the whole thing, you will see he doesn't feel likea true ace just yet as he hasn't perfect gunship killing and done the vette on his own. HE has the title, but hasn't accepted it yet.

As for the subject of the post.....screw the random spawns. Go back to your Teir 4 trainer and get duty missions. You can still get them as an Ace. Once you get 30min into the duty, thespawns snowball and spawn one after the other in waves of 6 and 7. You will amass all the loot you could want...while not breaking in on some newB player that shouldnt be doing random spawns anyaway and should be doing HIS duty missions as well. Shoot, go to the Theed Palace and get the RSF teir 4 duties. They are Black Sun ships and you might even get the BS helmet. You can do RSF missions no matter what Privateer sqaudron you fly for.

There is not a single random spawn that can generate the XP and loot of a duty misison over a 2 hours time period. Random spawns are only good for FP....but then that's what Deep Space is for.

There is no need to become the monster you hated as you became a pilot. The game gives you all you need.

Heh, i actually did go on a duty mission but I took it from my trainer on dantooine. I want to get the BS helmet, and all they had with the Suns was an escort mission. Very boring. But I will give this a try now :-D Thanks for the tip.

Just for the record, there are static spawns in the game that drop level 1 - 10 equipment in amounts that blow away duty missions. My fav is 2 items of loot for every 3 kills All you gotta do is explore to find these area's

That would be your opinion, not a record or fact. In theory, the ships have an equal chance of dropping loot, and since you kill far more int eh same time frame on a duty...you can do the math I am sure.

Well I'll tell you, I have a great love of flying. I just leveled to 2221 and man I love it. It is such a nice yang to the ground ying. I am a quest who-re, and the mixture of ground and space combinations, plus the"being looked at possibility of capitol ships" isjust to attractive. I love flying around , and Im getting that itchy feeling that everytime I log in I just want to go find that new engine or that mack daddy shield or reactor I havent seen yet. I love it , anddidnt think I would. Great reading too btw. I enjoyed your story, seeing I am now one of those competing , but I havent been anywhere that another flyer was.
