Ok, i am an imperial pilot, i have X11X for my template so far, and today i got blown up 4 times, and couldnt even make 4k of exp to get another expirience box, i still have that first tie fighter, that the trainer supplies you with.

i have a mouse (naturaly) and a joystick which is best?

My tactics, fly in a straight line towards whatever T locks onto and start shooting at it, i then follow it around shooting its ass, but i ALWAYS seem to be getting shot by other ships... someone please help my newb ass out, i want to make Ace, but the way i am going, i aint even gona complete tier 1... any help is appriciated, thanks.

Are you hitting the target? If you can't do enough damage fast enough, try switching targets on them. Also, what are you fighting ... if it's Tier 3, you're not going to live long.

I can hit the target no problems, and i am fighting tier 1s, i just seem to get plastered with laser fire much faster than i can take ships out, my aim is fine, but as i follow one ship, firing and hitting often, i just seem to get shot to pieces by other ships in the area.

I know a lot of people that prefer mouse only. I myself fight better with a joystick, I use the logitech wirelessone and it works pretty nice.

As to being killed. Ask someone to help you with missions and when your just doing duty missions for xp ask a master to take you to deep space in a turret and just sit back and enjoy the ride.

You have to watch the tunnel vision.

If you have 3 or 4 ships on you, its all about manuevering. You're on one guy, cool, but if you start taking more thana few hits from his buddies, break off. Don't sit there, locked into the one target, and ignore the others. He'll still be damaged when you get back to him.

Other thing is to dodge while you're shooting. Sure, you'll get less hits in, but you don't get hit as often yourself. Roll in a nice corkscrew, and you're very hard to hit.

if you're getting overwhelmed switch to disabling the ships instead of destroying them outright. it will let you move onto the next target much faster. disabled ships will self destruct after a couple minutes and you won't get exp or loot if that happens. once you've evened the odds a bit you can retarget the disabled ships for quick kills. consider them targets of opportunity instead of threats though. missing out on a few kills but surviving is much better than being shot down.

i recomend getting a good 3 axis joystick with at least 8 programable buttons.i feel that the level of control and the speed of hitting buttons is far better than you can get with a mouse and keyboard. also even if you're going to buy it online go to a comp store and check out the various models in person to see which feels comfortable, especially if you're left handed.
