Well, I spent all weekend in my M22-T Krayt loaded with two Mining Laser 3's and a Tractor Beam to get enough resources to build 3 Y-8 Only Mining Lasers. I equipped them on my Y-8 and took it out solo last night. It helped alot that I have an engine loaded with yaw, pitch, and roll of 67 especially after I sat in operations and ran the engine overload program. I'll definitely go for high yaw, pitch, and roll when I get a POB Only Elite Engine made, say about 70 on each. The Y-8 Only Elite Mining Laser under pilot control sliced off a large chunk with one shot. One or two shots all it took to break it up into small pieces. But that's were the Y-8 falls short. I was able to shoot maybe 3 of the small chunks before they hit the zone wall and went bad or disappeared completely. In my starfighter, I could have vaccuumed all of them up with a tractor beam I had in my M22-T's third pilot weapon slot. This could be fixed by placing a Wide Angle Y-8 Only Tractor Beam in the ordinance slot that sucks up all small chunks in a 90 degree cone in front of the Y-8. Just need to fire the tractor beam as soon as you crack a large chunk apart. Such would switch the Y-8 from less effecient than a starfighter miner to more effecient and make the mining ship worthwhile. Why the hell did they put an ordinance slot on this thing anyway? It doesn't make sense. Turret gunners would get to shoot any stray chunks and add effeciency. But the main mining job would be the pilot's task. The real fun for the gunners comes when the Asteroid Pirates pop which is fairly often. And that will keep them plenty busy. In fact, I could see dropping the mining lasers from the turrets and putting in elite POB only weapons instead.
