Wanting to switch to imp for the jedi starfighter quest then go back to rebel.

as i understand it you cant you would have to give up your rebel pilot status and if a rebel on the ground that too

No you can not.
Infact, the very act of resigning the rebel faction on the ground will strip you of any skill boxes and exp you have in the Rebel pilot skill tree.
