I have always used the default setting for trigger, i.e. fire and cycle. But since I started to mine I have started to think about changing this since I am both carring a normal gun and a mining laser. Now I use "2" for fire my mining laser (tried to assign weapon group 2 to one of the extra joystick buttons but will not repeat fire when having it pressed). There is another option, "fire current group".
What are you using, fire and cycle or fire current group? However i don't want to reassign my setup when I do mining or other missions, but I guess I can reassing weapons so when I do normal missions I place all my weapons in same group. But that is firing all weapons at one time, not sure if that has any disadvanatage (or advantages for that matter). Guess only problem with firing all weapons at once is that a) I might not have energy to fire all, b) I will not fire a continous fire (but since refire is low I don't think that should be much of a problem or is it)?
What are you using? How are you handling when you don't want to fire all weapons at one time? Another use is if you have a setup with ion and disruptors and switching between those two.
Btw, how do you accces the weapon group setup (sorry been away from space for 7 months and forgot a lot)

When I'm mining I set up my missile launcher button to fire the tractor beam and group all the other guns up (lasers and mining ones) and make them one big weapon group.
Only requires re-configuring weapon groups rather than key bindings, so it's kinda nice. Running Cap overload you shouldn't even have to worry about using up too much energy from firing guns that wont help the mining process. This also makes it much easier to take down raiders (since even mining lasers damage ships).

Yes if you fire all weapon at once I think that would work. But if you have trigger set to fire and recyle you will loose some firing rate.
At the moment capacitor energy is not a problem.
BTw, where is the weapon group setup?

I allways volley fire regardless so setup one group and just fire current group on the trigger. Not sure how common practice that is though.

When I'm mining I have my mining laser on weapon port 2, my tractor beam on port 3 and my main gun on port 1. I manually fire only the mining laser by holding down 2 on the keyboard till a piece breaks off. Then I hit F10 (my /target Asteroid Chuck macro) and F11 (my follow macro) then hit 6 on my keyboard which is bound to "toggle tractor beam" which leaves the beam on. If I get attacked I switch to my joystick and just use the trigger to fire. This ends up shooting things with the Main Gun and Mining Laser (oh well!) but also turns off my tractor beam for me.
Then it's back to the keyboard to keep mining. F10 and F11 work nicely, since when my hand's in position my pinky can use Home/End to speed up or slow down as needed. heh

One question that I have about using your mining laser and weapon on a cycle is mining efficiency. I thought you get more material based on the following order tractor beam > mining laser > blaster. If I hit the asteroid pieces with my blaster, am I hurting the amount of stuff I am going to collect?

Blasters don't do any thing to astroids. Well, they shouldn't. Blasters should be unable to mine at all. So it comes to tractor in those small chunks and use you lasers to blast stuff to the small pieces.
I ahve my laser and my gun set to the same group and ahve my tractor beam toggled on when I mine. Most tractor beams won't draw energy fast enough to drainteh cap and you never ahve to hold the trigger button for the tractor beam.
