When using a mouse to aim, there are two aiming reticles, one that looks like an "x", and one that looks sort of like a box. Which of these is more accurate to use? I find that in longer-ranges the box-like reticle is more effective, but at closer range, the x shaped one is better. This is also assuming that I put the reticle on the lead in front of the enemy ship. (hope that question sounds ok to everyone.

I can't quite visualize everything in the UI (and it's too late at night for me to get in game and launch) but let me send you off on a tangent.
The Lead that is generated when you target a ship is wrong. It is a rough estimate using a mathematical model that seems to account for only constant speed and direction, and those less than perfectly. Very rarely are you able to line up a shot against a target that does not change speed or direction (and most of the times you can, the target has turrets). One of the best things you can do as a Pilot is to accept that the Lead is wrong and that you need to find out for yourself where you need to shoot to hit.
There are several factors you can use, and the Lead may be the most important, but you must also be aware of what the target is doing (simple pitch/yaw turn, evasive maneuvers, etc) as well as the targets ability to change speed and direction quickly (A-Wings/Advanceds may be spry, but B-Wings/Bombers plod along).
Accepting that the Lead is not the ideal place to shoot will improve your accuracy in the long run.

In addition, fly duty missions without using the leads. Target the escort ship and take out the fighters using nothing but your eye....this will let you get to know your ship and guns really well and will save your skin in PvP

You can turn that thing off? How?
And while we're on the subject, what purpose does the circle around your crosshairs serve? I can't remember what it's called... something to do with targeting, I know. It's size is adjustable from one of the options menus in space.

Read it again. He didn't turn it off, he said select one ship, and fire at another - you will have no lead (or any target info at all) on the ship you are shooting towards.

Ummm... my apologies.
So it's just the old Privateer trick, without being able to hit the second target with missiles.

There are more than just theX and the box in the center of the screen.
I believe the OP is talking about /ui reticleSelect 0-4 and there are that many possibilities. Personally I use the Circle.
