Thread: Thoughts on Prestige Points

I know a lot of ace pilots really would like something to do with their millions of prestige points. I hope, too, that something will be done with them, like giving us something to buy with them, or giving us new areas to travel to using them. Something, anything. I did have a random thought though tonight and, while it's not fleshed out completely, has some merit.

Add an elite profession on top of pilot. Something like "Squadron Commander." Basically, the idea would be to gain abilities that would allow groups under your command to benefit from your leadership. It would allow a squadron to function together more closely.

Some possible commands for starfighter squadrons:

/formup -- This is a great way to reintroduce formations! Allow a squad commander to designate formations for his squadron.

/designateplayertargets -- A command for PvP, it would assign an enemy player as the target for each pilot in the Commander's squadron.

/designatemytarget -- A general command, it would feed all pilots in the squadron the Commander's target.

/sysgroupmsg -- Works like the ground Squad Leader's command; sends a system message to all members of the squadron.

/equalizespeed -- Sets the entire squadron's speed to the slowest ship's maximum.

/setgroupspeed xxx -- Sets the entire squadron's speed to the squadron commander's designated number; if ship can't make that speed, it is set to maximum.

Of course, it would be great to have Commander abilities for a POB. It would give the copilot more to do! Some possible commands for POBs, since a copilot's current job is usually limited to "hit cap to shield shunt!":

/painttargetx -- Would "paint" the Commander's current target for either turret #1 or turret #2.

/tacticalview -- Would bring up a longer-range display like the old XvT map which would give the Commander an overview of the battlefield. It would also be great if we could add a tactical display to a POB for a Commander to use.

Some extra droid commands would be nice, though it would be best if they were limited to squadron commanders (e.g. anybody can load them, but only squadron commanders can use them):

/missilelockfeed -- Feeds the Commander's missile lock data to other members of the squadron, allowing other starfighters to launch missiles on the Commander's target. Would be great for PvP to balance Rebel craft against the Imperials' TIE Oppressor.

This is just a really rough sketch; a lot of details need to be filled in before it amounts to anything like a proposal. What are your thoughts/ideas on this?

I think it sounds like a generally good idea. The one weakness I see in it, however, lies with the way combat currently seems to unfold: while tactical maps rock and all, they're ideally suited for large fleet encounters, or at least skirmishes between multiple large and ungainly vessels.

In other words, I think this would dovetail very nicely with an improved POB aspect of JtL. I think the usefulness (if not the coolness) would be rather stunted if limited near-exclusively to starfighter combat.

(Yea, there's a *hint hint* in there).

Certainly an interesting idea. You must consider, though, that an 'elite' profession on top of Pilot would give no other option. What I mean is that Pilot requires 0 skill points, so there is no trade off between being a Pilot or being another Profession... you simply do both. Having an 'elite' profession on top of Pilot that does require skill points would be one way to approach it, but I would have a hard time supporting that if the 'elite' profession provides bonuses that would un-balance combat against players choosing not to spend those skill points. A profession, even a stunted one, full of 'Squad Leader' type abilities with a low skill point cost would be something worth exploring, in my opinion.

Typically, the Pilot of a POB ship has enough to worry about. That person is already trying to coordinate a multi-player crew inside that one ship, so I'd hate to place the additional burden of Squadron coordination on that person.

One thought is simply giving the Group Leader of any group in space a few additional commands to help coordinate the group's actions. /designategrouptarget is one that would be particularly useful, though you have shown there are others.

I'll address your concerns one at a time.

The idea isn't to tie up skill points; the idea is to give players something else to work for after mastering pilot. A large part of the "Squadron Commander" concept is to have something to do with prestige points, which are currently worthless aside from the 30k entry fee into Deep Space.

I suppose it would also be great if it were mission and tier-based, just like the regular Pilot professions, but these would *require* groups since you're training to be a Squadron Commander...and after all, what's a Commander without command experience? Just a thought. That makes this slightly more difficult than just soloing a mission and filling in the boxes with the necessary prestige.

Instead of giving the Commander abilities to the pilot, they would go to the copilot, the person in the ops chair. That person typically doesn't have that much to do, in my experience. In fact, I'd like to either completely move droid command and specials over to the Pilot's chair, or split it so that both the copilot and pilot can run specials and droid commands. However, the basic idea of using this on POBs is to give that copilot more of a job, more importance, something to do.

That's another reason I've been pondering this. It's really difficult to designate and differentiate targets in our current system with a good-sized group.

I hope that answers some of your concerns.

I'm wondering if you see it as something everyone would attempt to do upon obtaining the 'normal' pilot Master/Ace, or something that few would pursue? For it not to become the natural progression of everyone, how would you see it limiting the people who try (or the people who succeed)?

I agree there are better ways to utilize the Ops Chair on a POB ship (I had to make a conscious effort to not come back saying 'make that an Ops Chair job'). With a skilled crew, and the ability of gunners to run Droid Programs, I am comfortable flying with a three player crew (which feels a little wrong).

I'm not sure. I think if it were mission-based with a group requirement (e.g. you have to have a group in order for the mission to start when you enter a sector), a lot of pilots wouldn't. The idea behind such a profession isn't to add extra abilities for a solo pilot, which a lot of people are, but for a pilot who regularly leads groups, whether in PvP or PvE. But really, I don't really have a sense either way of whether it would be "the natural progression" or just a specialty.

So, in other words...

I DON'T KNOW!

Hmmm.... I like the idea... it could improve battle tactics and strategies enormously.

I too am a bit concerned about skillpoints. On the one hand piloting curently does not require any skillpoints... shipwright on the other hand does. Skillpoint usage for this type of profession could balance it out a bit but on the other hand being commanderleader offers no extra way to make money. I personally would also like to keep master dancer and master doc on the ground as i enjoy both professions.

Furthermore, skillpoint usage for an elite space profession could also result in no one actually using the profession (similar to squadleader on the ground ).

Also a few good commands dont make a full profession. But additing bonusses to your ship or even your entire squadron would make skillpoints necessary or it would be too much of an advantage (might even be a too big advantage even with skillpoints).

If it was going to be just those few commands id preffer them to be in master pilot boxes of each faction. Only the groupleader could actually use them.

This would neither exclude new, talented strategists being turned down as they dont have squadron leader nor would it affect space battles more than pure strategy does... it would just encourage and promote tactics.
