How do you initiate one of these? Is it the same as jumping from one system to another?

Yes, you just select another coordinate in the system you're currently in. It makes a lot of sense to use and waypoint said spots in a particular mission-specific sector BEFORE having to use them in a particularly hard mission, as it's nice to have a general idea on where you're going to come out.

WARNING: Don't do an in-system jump during a destroy duty mission as it really screws up the spawn counter... I messed up a Black Sun duty like that the other day and had to end it prematurely. Had to jump out mid-wave because they spawned amid the droid fighters and I was getting mauled... what a mess.

Why would you HAVE to do an in-system jump during a destroy duty - just go into your datapad and end the mission manually.

because you're getting your ass handed to you and you need to bug out and regroup before you die
aborting a destroy duty doesnt make the currently spawned ships blow up or leave you alone...

Well damn...I never had that problem, so I guess I can't comment. Duties were always monotonously easy for me, even as a new grinder way back in November '04, using a crafted L7 blaster that was a complete piece of crap compared to what's possible today.

Typically they are for me as well... but sometimes, the next waypoint appears somewhere inconvenient - such as all too near to the swarm of droid fighters that occupy that region of Endor space. 5 or 6 Tier 5 at a time? Not a problem. Add in a whole lot of very small, very fast Tier 5s and it's just good sense to bug out rather than be destroyed.
